The Source engine takes nothing to run. Overhead is very little. So the idea has been tossed around to run some other Source based games.
Garry's Mod?
Scary as it is, Counterstrike?
HL2 Co-op for Candice?
thoughts?

Not Counterstrike.
Something about a VSF Counterstrike server makes me cringe.
Perhaps Multiplayer Peggle?

i bet angry's grandmother would pwn us all at it.
I would look into Left 4 Dead (http://www.l4d.com/) when it comes out.
How about The Ship?
Killing each other with badminton rackets would be a hoot.

Day of Defeat? I would have to buy it but it was fun in the free weekend.
I downloaded the Insurgency mod the other day. I only played it for a little bit, mostly because I was getting my ass handed to me, but it seemed like it could be fun.
It is Source and all you need is HL2.

I'm thinking you don't even need HL2 to play Insurgency (or other Source mods like ZombieMaster or Sourceforts, etc), just the Source SDK Base which you get with HL2 Deathmatch, which IIRC was included with the Orange Box (and EP1 itself earlier, and other Source packages). Check the Tools tab (or somewhere) in Steam for 'Source SDK Base'; it should start updating it if you play one of these mods and don't already have it.
I've heard fairly good things about Insurgency, but also that it was a bit rough (eg you could see muzzleflash through walls). There have been new versions since then.
ADHD Synopsis: Orange Box owners can play these mods for free.

Dali, because we love you so much, I've added this to the pool for a shakedown. Running on the same IP as the TF2 servers, 74.52.239.66, port is 27030. I know very little of this game, but the few minutes I played around with it last night, I thought it was neat.
Iron sites, lots of close quarters stuff. A squad based system, so it seems. Does run on Source-SDK, so I'm not sure what you exactly need to run it. Orange Box or HL2 alone s/b sufficient.
I've added the client download (ftp://vsfuser:password@74.52.239.66/game%20patches%20and%20updates/Source%20Games/Insurgency_client_beta_2.exe) to the VSF FTP site.

If HL2 Deathmatch is included in the download version of the Orange Box someone needs to explain to Roland how to download/access it because it doesn't show up as an option in his menu.
Poop.
I'm nor sure, Roland. See I got HL2 as part of that old Silver or Gold package, or whatever it was, back in 04 or whenever. It included the entire back catalog of HL2/HL related games.
Then I just read this on the wiki page for HL2
Half-Life 2 was released without a multiplayer component, and was instead packaged with Counter-Strike: Source.[34] This changed on November 30, 2004, when Valve released the Half-Life 2: Deathmatch component on Steam for US$9.95.
I know I didn't pay 9.95, but perhaps due to the package I previously purchased, I was grandfathered in.
But that's not to say it won't work for you. When I installed the Insurgency client, it showed up in my Steam games list, and when launched is said "Source SDK now launching" not HL2DM.
Cool beans!!
Their site says all you need is HL2/Orange Box and a Steam account.
I'll be sure to check out the server when I get a chance to game, which is not very often recently. I played it a little more last night and actually got some kills. The different game modes seem pretty cool. I had fun playing push and defending as the insurgents.

So this was a bust and a boon. No, not a n00b.
Anyway, I see a hotfix was released, supposed to impact the horrid crashing. I loaded it, see if it makes a difference. If not, meh. I'll throw Zombie Master on for RuperT and Candubar.

I played HL2 many moons ago but have not played anything that came from it. I'll give this a go and see how it is.

The game is based on the Source engine but the development team have licensed the technology for 'The Ship'. ‘The Ship’ is also a product with a depth of gameplay which far surpasses the original mod version and graphically, it’s beautiful. We believe it is excellent value for money.
:P
Though I do understand that it would probably only be RuperT, Nv and my self killing each other. I was just throwing out ideas.

It's pretty fun and VERY tough to win as a Survivor.
Haven't given the Zombie Master a try yet -- that could be fun.
There were some hard-core players on the (full!) server during the time I was on. Go figure.

Yes, go to Zombiemaster.org for more info.
And thanks to the 1337 Googling skillz of our good friend from Edmonton (OMG, Canada bailing out Teh US h4x!!!) .....anyway, we seem to have gotten past the crazy big red error h4x. If all is truly well, the Insurgency server s/b all good as well.
