I have been messing about with Wikis lately... ranging from editing the one for Lost, setting up one for OSVDB, and setting one up for another site... and I think they are a great way to build collaborative sites... really really easy to use and drive a community, and to build something (hopefully) useful in a short amount of time.

I was poking around and didn't see a great resource for game information. I'm not talking reviews... I'm talking a user-driven game information, going beyond reviews or cheats or whatever on distinct sites...

A general, community-driven gaming resource. It could have any/all of the following:
- game reviews
- walk-thrus by members
- cheats / codes
- pre-release info on games
- help / tricks
- hacks (if not storing the hacks, cataloging them by name, what they do, how to get, how to disable, how to catch, etc.)

My reasons for this are varied.. i'm not sure I can pin them down--but part of it is about preserving gaming history and information. Do you remember the game "Conflict"? What happened to all those old RTCW how-to docs?

With more and more information on the net, more and more is being lost.

So... with all the creative energy here, I thought perhaps some of you might be interested. You may convince me this is a good idea. Or a terrible one. Or simply unworkable. Or that it already exists. Or you may not respond and give me an idea of the interest level. Maybe I'm on crack.

Also, this would be a part of VSF but not on VSF proper... it would have a distinct place to live.

I think its a novel idea, bat. I'm not sure how well it would fly.

The community is greatly friendly; but I'm thinking that noone would use a wikisite. I could be wrong - people might have an interest in writing an artical or two.

I'm not entirely sure whether or not I'd buy into it. I'd wait for some more feed back before setting everything up though.

I added poll with some options... please let me know how you feel about it.

I cast my vote.

I do like to write - and I've been told I have some-what of a knack for it. I much like to edit articals and correct spelling mistakes; keeping in mind that I sometimes have trouble picking out my own.

Sounds interesting I would help out a little bit but work might get in the way. I will try to help as much as I can just let me know when u want to start. I don't write articles too much because my grammar sucks

The point of it being a wiki would be that you could go in and fix typos, and if that's all you did... it would be a help. My theory is that if we started it, and just started putting a template in for each and added game info into it, it would pick up momentum from outside of VSF. It's easy to add 'stub' information to it to get started... continuing with my "Conflict" game example, we'd add it, some screen shots (yes, I have it), publisher info... doesn't have to be a ton of work.

Maybe it won't take off? Maybe it will?

Bat, maybe you are on crack. How do we know? Who cares? Point is, I'm afraid of what can happen if this technology falls into the wrong hands.

I mean, godsforbid some of us *cough* should be trusted with information of any kind, I mean, that others will see.

;)

Sounds like a marvelous idea though, even though I should be precluded from having any kind of writing power-oversight. I mean, a public [edit] mode? Dear gods the pain the person "in charge" of monitoring it will suffer through.

I'd love to help out when I get back.

It's a cool idea, but I can't help but think it wouldn't reach its full potential. Its success would depend on the interface, and how easy it is to input, maintain and find information.
