This last Sunday my lvl 60 warrior on Earthen Ring participated in a raid on Molten Core. This was our/my third time trying to defeat one of several bosses in the instance: To get to the boss you have to work your way past various 62elites - giants, core hounds, elementals and the like. The raid consists of 40 characters of varying classes. All but two were lvl60 - the two others were lvl59.

The raid entered the instance and then began the buffing and set up. During this period, the tanks were to be assigned targets in the first encounter: a pair of molten giants. One of our warriors completely misunderstands the raid leader and charges forth to 'pull' the giants. We are completely unprepared and wipe out. An inauspicious beginning - clearly a sign, so we ignore it. The fellow is so distraught at his misdeed that he insists on leaving the raid before he can do any more harm. Fortunately, another tank was hoping to get into the raid so it worked out.

We continued throug through various other mobs and finally got to our primary target for the evening: Lucifron and his two lieutenants. After clearing a pack of hounds, its time to take on the boss. We wiped the first time (and maybe the second) but finally we had Luci on the ropes. My GF is yelling at the monitor (we were both down by this point - it was up to the casters), "I think we got him! He's almost down!" Sure enough, with only a handful of people left standing, Lucifron finally falls. My GF is ecstatic - she's jumping up and down and hugging me. As the dust clears and she sits down to await the resurrection from the survivors, it happens... WORLD SERVER DISCONNECTED.

WTF!!!on1e!! We immediately attempt to reconnect. She's able to get back in after a few tries but I'm having no luck - I just keep getting World Server Down messages. From what we could figure, the instance server was still up while the Eastern Kingdoms world server was down. The Kalimdor server was still up. We could not loot Luci because the raid leader was 'dead' and it was set to master-looter. As best we could tell, if a character had been down for a long time, they are moved to a queue to the graveyard (this is guesswork). The graveyard is on the world server, so those of us in that queue got barred from rejoining since 'our' server was down. *sigh*

The remaining raid members hang out for a while, hoping things will resolve. They don't. Lucifron's corpse disappears. To tackle the next boss you need something from his corpse - the raid was over. My GF hearthed to Gadgetstan and continued to play until the GMs restarted the server in order to 'find out where they misplaced the Eastern Kingdoms' (at least they have a sense of humor).

After the server was back up, my GF and I joined another raid to Upper Black Rock Spire (15 person this time). Things move along quickly and we are rapidly moving to one of the key opponents - a big hound that drops Finkles Skinner - a special skinning knife/dagger that grants +10 to skinning (allowing the skinning of lvl62 mobs). We kill the beast and sure enough, he drops the knife.

Someone calls on the skinner300s to roll on the item - so we start to do so. But this knife is required to acquire certain quest items so the raid-leader decides to assign the weapon rather than simply roll on it. The raid leader is the same one from the Molten Core raid and, at this time, was contacted by the GMs and working out what happened in MC and trying to figure out a resolution to the lootlessness of our raid. Thus distracted, she made an error. Rather than asking for the names of those to be considered, she compiles the list from those who rolled or otherwise stated they could use the knife. I backed out of contention since I don't plan on doing MC with them for the near future. They awarded the knife to some guy and passed it to him. At which point he announces, "Noo! I was joking when I rolled... I'm not a skinner.." Opps... too late... Later that evening he joined their guild and switched from mining to skinning to make up for it. For the record, he never said he could use it, he rolled when the non-master-looter called for skinners to roll.

What a night for that guild and its raid leader...

That was the second time that knife dropped and I took a pass on it. Next time I am staying in contention and asking to be considered. My GF is in the guild and thinks they were leaning towards giving it to me.

OMFG THATS HILARIOUS but at the same time I'm sorry to hear about your mishaps.

We've been doing some MC runs ourselves and to get disconnected right when you'll about to get a chance at an epic item totally BLOWS. (thank god that hasnt happened to us in MC..yet)

And that raid leader that 'gave away' the skinner knife..**** happens I guess and bad timing with the GM thing. It's not like the GM's were going to 'reimburse' yall for the epic item from Luci. More like, "We're sorry about that. Try again."

Update:
The conversations with the GMs have had effect. The raid is being provided with the loot from Luci! Among the drops were two epics... one was part of a caster set and kept in-guild. The second is epic plate legplates (Flamewaker Legplates (http://wow.allakhazam.com/item.html?witem=18861)). After some debate, the guild is allowing all the warriors (including the non-guild ones like myself) to roll on it... One has already passed on it, giving me a 1 in 4 shot... wish me luck!

Another update:
I forgot to update this...
It turns out that the warrior that passed decided to roll after all. However, one of the others couldn't be tracked down and so it was back to 1 in 4. We met in the bank (two showed up without pants to emphasize their need for the leggings)... I won with a mighty roll of 69! Woohoo! The pants are mine! It took more than a week for the items to finally make it to me though. But they made it, and that is what matters. Props to the guild to sticking to their loot rules and letting the item pass outta the guild* despite protests from the inside.
