hey glenn, welcome to the nuthouse! :D
if your only char is at lv10, i would suggest making a new on on Eldre'Thalas so you can actively play us and we can help you there.
as far as classes, i think rogue is probably a good starter one, i would advise against a warlock or even druid for your first. shaman might be ok. hunters and warriors are good too. casters are hard to start with though...
my best advice is just do as many quests as possible and try not to waste money. and use the AH- you can make some serious cash there, and occasionally find some really good deals too.
if you do hop on E'T, /join VSF and we'll add you to the guild so we can communicate easier, as well as hook you up with a free red shirt and squirrel ^^

If you're new to MMORPG or RPG type games, getting a feel for melee classes like warrior or rogue would probably be best. Casters will take a little reading and planning. Druid, IMHO, is not too bad for starting either.
If you're on Eldre'Thalas, /join VSF and hunt one of us down. I (Kagasan & Shmee) can hook you up with some basics like bags. Think I (Shmee) can make a bunch of 8 slot with what I have in stock right now as well as a shirt. (for no reason but to look cool)
If you do play on Eldre, post what professions you are doing in the Chars/skills thread. Then we can either help you out or bug you for stuff. :)
I'm usually on as either Kagasan or Shmee from 8:30 - 10/10:30 unless Fennel shows up and keeps me up til midnight. :sigh:
Also, group into instances whenever you can. Try to read up on what your class' role in a group should be so you can support the group. WoW class forums has some good stuff on that.
Oh yeah, we are Horde. That's important to note if you want to catch up with us in game. :)
Welcome to the forums.

Night Elf is Alliance side. We would not be able to help much in game.

One might even say that you are the ENEMY!!!1!!1!one1!!!
As for classes to play... there has been much discussion about this. In general, it appears that rogue and mage seem to be the 'simpler' classes to play. Both are DPS classes, meaning they deal out lots of damage. Rogue does it in melee while the mage does it from distance. Neither wears strong armor (leather for rogues, cloth for mage). Warriors appear simple, but the necessity for stance-hopping to be effective makes it difficult to play well. Still, at lower levels this isn't much of an issue. I've never played a shaman, druid, priest or warlock. I've only played a hunter for a pitifully small amount of time. I would say that the biggest problem with hunters is adapting the tactics you develop soloing to playing in a group. I imagine the same applies for warlocks. Priests have high survivability but soloing takes a loooong time. Priests are popular in groups - though they are frequently the target of unreasonable complaints (example: "You suck at healing, you shoulda healed my pet." "Um, I died two minutes ago, scroll up your text and you will see my pleas for help.")

go horde my freind it is much more fun than aliance lol
we are all horde and can really only help if you are horde
hunter is a good class i prefer my shawman or a warior to most ohter classes but as kaga stated i have not been in game of late
as work is taking up my time as you know..so my oppinion does not count  start a horde char tonight and join vsf channle ill try to be on tonight and will look for you post you chars name (if you start a new one) here when you can.
also you can have more than one char so if you like your night elf keep him and play him as well most of us have more than 2 char's we have one that we play as our main and the rest for fun.
and you can ask all the questions you want here just dont ask me :D i know nothing and can prove it !!!

i found that as a warlock in a group, you are basically only as good as your Voidwalker. if he can tank it up, great! you can also try to dole out some minor casting dmg. if you lose the VW or something, you're worthless. since warlocks can't really cast any spells on anyone but themselves, its really only good for soloing.

O.K. I am an Orc Hunter. I will probably be picking up mining and blacksmithing next time out (tonight). I go by Nelg. I will try to get in tonight, hope to see ya there, definately this weekend (late evenings into early mornings).

I know next to nothing about Warlocks... but...
I thought they had a selection of damage-over-time (DOT) spells to use on opponents. While not whiz-bang flash like a mage, they are effective when coupled with the pet tanking. I've heard that warlocks do uncursing and debuffing but I'm not sure how often these come up. I've also heard that they are popular to have in large raids, probably for the decursing at higher levels.
Move to a party situation, assuming you have a warrior tanking, the pet can be held in reserve to handle adds. Should the main tank lose the aggro, the pet can help defend the casters from the main opponent. The succubus, if you have one, can basically take one opponent out of the battle if the charm succeeds. The point being, you have to change how you play when you are in a group.
