Okay, I just got my iPOD and installed iTunes right away (after charging the iPOD of course). It seemed simple enough to import CDs into your library. So I insert a CD, iTunes is able to recognize it (track names, genre, etc) but when I try to play a song on iTunes, it just scrolls down the entire song list without playing a song. This happened to one of my other music players as well. Thinking this was alittle strange, I tried to import the CD and it went surprisingly fast. I check my library and all the data is there except the track times. I tried to play it and same problem. I went to check the mp3 files in my folder and they're about 10kb each. Anyone ever experience any problems with this before? I'm checking the apple discussion boards but it doesn't seem very helpful.

This one thread seems to sum up my problem:

http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@582.L0iPaEOwRnK.0@.68a59ce4

Transferring my mp3s to my iPOD works like a charm, I have no problems with that. Playing CDs on winamp for WMP seem to be fine but i've had this problem with my creative music player and now iTunes. Any thoughts?

The best I can show you is the CD Diagnostics:

Why is it I get the uneasy feeling this is some sort of surreptitious and nefarious anti-piracy crap comming down in the form of a windows update?

The latest version of iTunes for PC is 4.7.1.30.

You just got iPod? Did you install iTunes/Quicktime from CD?
You might try going to Apple site and download complete latest version installer and reinstall.
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

(QT 6 includes latest version of iTunes)

Yeah, I just got the iPOD this past weekend. I installed the iTunes/Quicktime from the CD and then installed the latest version from the site. Then i read on the discussion boards that many people were having problems with 4.7.1 so i uninstalled and reinstalled 4.6 which seems to be more stable for alot of users. I just posted a thread on the apple site with no help so far. ack. :very mad:

Just to satisfy my own curiosity, I figured I'd see if I could play CD's through my Itunes insallation, and I can. I know it's not the newest version of Itunes though. I keep Itunes shut down as much as possible, as it's a bit of a memory hog on my work PC, at least. So I rip CD's with db power amp (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm) and listen to my MP3's with winamp and only use itunes when I'm moving MP3's to my ipod. But I understand anyones desire to have one program do it all, like itunes should be able to do for you. I'll update to the newest itunes and see if I get the same crappy scenario. You say it won't play with a different player, but will it play if you rip it with a different ripping program?

Yes, i'd rather have one program do it all. Plus, i'd like to know what's wrong with iTunes or my PC. iTunes is able to play MP3s without a problem (ripped by other programs or the already existing mp3's that I have). For some reason, it won't play ANY CD that I have nor will it import for me. WMP, Winamp and Realplayer play the CDs fine. I did notice that my Creative Audigy player had the same problem. I went into the settings and an option for "digital" playing was checked on rather than a different setting that I can't think of. I unchecked that and the player was again able to play CDs. Not sure if that helps or not.

I guess my next step is to update my motherboard drivers and maybe see if my sound card needs updating.

Thanks for the help.

See if any of these help at all.

This one did the trick! :D It seems like there was a conflict with all the media players I had with my computers and I had to make iTunes the default player within XP. Thanks, you guys rock.

Excellent! Glad we could help.

It was as I suspected, other resources and iTunes were vying for control.

Yeah, now I have to figure out how to make my playlists look nice. It's kind of a pain to scroll through all the artists/albums. Uploaded about 8 albums last night :)

Dude, you will spend hours doing this!
First make sure you use Gracenote to label the tracks you import if you're not already.
Advanced> Get CD Track Names.
Beware, there can occasionally be typos and mistakes in the Gracenote data.

Once I consolidated all my MP3's obtained from various sources I had to go in and clean up the tags, filenames etc. Just when I think I have them all tweaked to where I want it I notice a typo while playing a song on my iPod!

Odd. iTunes never seemed to have any problem importing my CD's with track names and so on.

Me neither. I did 200+ albums, and only two that were quite scratched had issues...

What I meant was imported CD tracks were fine, except for the few typos from Gracenote. However, my collection of MP3 files obtained from other sources needed the tags cleaned up, converted etc. Then I had to catagorize everything, Rock, Ska, Bluegrass, etc.

Now, if you were commenting on Mad Sci's problem with iTunes & Windows in general, I have seen various "competing" programs fight among themselves for control before. Never let WMP be your default anything!

oh i know... there is no QC for the gracenote data, though it beats typing it all out! i have spent hours cleaning up other mp3s...
