View Full Version : Anyone else buff for fun?

Anyone else just randomly cast buffs on people as you're running down the road just to see their reaction, if any?
Last night I ended up with 4 concurrent buffs and none were mine. Rez'd one guy, cast Renew and fortitude on him, got thorns and mark of the wild <?>. Got one for Arcane intellect from someone else and a higher level priest cast a higher fortitude on me for rez'ing him.
Then I died 5 minutes later and lost it all. :( Hehe, doesn't make you invincible. ;)
Anyway, just wondering if anyone else does random acts of kindness just to see the reaction. Not like it costs much unless you're about to enter battle.
One thing to keep in mind is that if you buff someone and they enter PvP, you become PvP enabled. Caught me by surprise the first time I did that.

One of the things they did with EQ2 that I don't like is the way they made it only possible to buff party members. Someone leaves the party, they lose all the buffs that other members cast on them, and take any buffs they cast along with them. I guess it was done because of all of the powerleveling done in EQ1. But in EQ1, yeah, I had a 32nd level Enchanter and a 38th (maybe 40th ?) level BeastLord, and it was always fun buffing strangers as you levitated past them. Most of the time they'd spend a minute looking around, but never looked up. You'd get a "Whoever just buffed the crap outta me, thanks!" And it was always nice when someone higher did the same for you. People would often try to make a donation, but I never took one unless it was from someone of a comparable level. Also, leveling up and making items that are less than perfect, well, I like to save them every now and then to give to newbies; it's usually better armor/food/jewelry than what they're using and appreciated. Everybody likes new stuff. Free new stuff is even better. Free new stuff that somebody just gives you out of nowhere, that's the best stuff. Karmic circle, you just might inspire someone to do the same thing and keep the good vibes flowing.

well if you ever run behind ignus he buffs everyone he runs by outside of the citieswich seemed strange at first becuse as chally stated you cant buff outside of your own party in EQII but it is cool and shows other players what kind of players you are. my leval 9 shawman only has healing but i do that to players that i run by. it is a good way t get a group also if you need one.

Yeah, it's gotten me a couple invites to group in the past too.
But like chaly, I like to do it on the "sneak" so to speak. Then watch people stop and look around for who did it.
That is one of the things that I miss most about not playing a caster. When I play my Druid I MotW and Thorns on everyone I see, as long as I had mana. This server I don't see it as much as on the Illidian server but maybe its just me.
Karma is a good thing.

I generally see it on the roads moving to and fro. You pass someone and they throw their arms up and drop a buff on you. There's no harm to it, so why not. Its funny when they give you something meaningless. Buffs that increase your intellect are not very useful to a warrior. Naturally, warriors have no buffs to throw so we just say thanks alot. Buffs from a lower level to a higher one can sometimes produce a chuckle. Then, of course, there is the buffing circle where all the casters gather around throwing buffs on eachother and any passerbies. Kinda cute.

Even though I don't play WoW, I love when buffs are randomly cast on my characters in CoH. When i'm feeling nice, I sometimes roam the lower lvl hazard zones and take my lvl 50 tank and taunt the mobs while the lowbies safely pounce on them. There's no XP leeching since i'm not doing dmg, just taunting the mobs to attack me.

I should note that I am coming from Anarchy Online where buffs were sold b/c they could help a player equip armor or implants that they could not get into w/o the buffs. Much of the "better" equipment in AO does not have a level requirement but a strength/agility/stamina/etc... requirement.
for example:
Helm requiring 55 str, I have 50 str, pay for a 5+ str buff, put on the helm and bingo, I'm set as long as I do not remove the helm before I naturally hit 55 str. There was a % limit of how far above your natural stat you could go. I believe it was your natural stat had to be at least 75% of the item requirement.
So I found random buffs to be rather comical and enjoyable in WoW.

I believe that Intellect governs the rate at which all your skills increase (including weapon skill, unless I'm mistaken). Also, I like to beg an Int buff when I'm about to go on an extended crafting jag in IF.
Also, I'm finding out that Intellect will increase my damage and/or crits on some of my Hunter attacks that have turned out to actually be considered spells. If your damage shows up as yellow (by default), it's a spell.
Some of this kind of information is extremely hard to come by, especially in an official context!

Hmmm...
I doubt that intellect will have any effect on training or crafting. If so, then the mages would be flying by the warriors in occupation skills. As for having an effect on the special attacks - that is a possibility. Hunters are different from warriors in that they are casters. They have and use mana where warriors have rage. However, even the warrior's special attacks are are considered 'casts', at least by the scripting interface, so perhaps a higher intellect can increase their effectiveness. Might be worth investigating...
Ok, before I posted this I mentioned the idea to my GF. She has a warrior at the same level as mine (actually a level ahead, she just leveled and I'm about to) but has also played a mage as a lower level alt.
As far as she can tell, Intellect == mana but it doesn't appear to affect the effectiveness of the spells themselves - that is dictated by level of the caster. She hardly professes to be an expert so this could be incorrect. I'll have to check with some of the higher levels mages I know to see if they have any insight. A little experimentation may be in order as well. I'd post on the WoW forums but the thread will just end up a string of "nerf mages" posts.. :P

I suppose this is where I saw the information on Intellect. I must've inferred the crafting skill benefit from the weapons skill benefit. I still have a deep personal conviction that it possibly might affect crafting increase (I'm talking about the likelihood of receiving a skill point from crafting a Green item, which would only benefit high Int types for those 5 or so skill points before Green becomes Grey; ie, not much).
As I said, it's such a hassle trying to find 'real' information on the game mechanics, I'd be thrilled to hear anything you dig up regarding further combat Int benefits.
[Edit] Don't miss the note about Int in Other Information regarding critical spells. Obviously, it would be very optimistic to assume this information is still/ever was 'the way it is'. God knows the web team can be out of touch (it's unsettling that it's referred to as 'Intelligence', for example).

i love to buff ppl as i run by, but im not gonna stop to do it, so i sometimes only hit 1 or 2 guys in a party, which is kind of funny :D
ill also try to heal someone getting mauled or even try to draw their mob so that they can run. and if i see a low lv guy being chased by a higher lv mob, ill usually try to draw the mob and kill it. unless they ask me not too, some ppl have weird battle strats i guess

Well, i stopped pulling the mob from them. Some people don't get that you can't steal their kill and yell at you. (first one to hit mob gets the kill) So only thing I'll do for someone in battle is drop an HoT on them or DoT on their mob.
If I am passing through an area and see some lone soul battling a monster I will generally take a moment to see how the battle is going. If the player is struggling, I will dismount and move to charge range. If the situation turns dire, I will rush in and taunt the mob to get the agg. This allows the other player to heal or escape. If low enough level, I might kill it in a swipe or two. They've already tapped the monster so I'm not kill-stealing. I've never had a complaint but my GF got one. She is quicker to join a battle though.. I like to take stock of the situation first and only join if needed. Anyway, she just shrugged, said sorry, and moved on. Since the vast majority of folks would prefer to avoid the long run in the shadows, I will continue doing this...
EDIT: regarding Intellect... it would seem from the description in that link that it might be worth getting an intellect boost when you gain a level and are trying to get those 5 skill points on your weapon, or if you are training up a new weapon.
