View Full Version : WoW: custom UIs

I am currently using Cosmos. A friend of mine uses Gypsy. I am a little frustrated with having to manipulate Cosmos with every patch so I'm considering switching to Gypsy. Does anyone use either one and have an opinion?

I also use Cosmos, but I'm itching to try a new UI. I occasionally get some strange errors that seem Cosmos related, and I don't really think I need everything that Cosmos offers. I want to be able to have a lot of buttons, but I'd like to put them where I want them. I also like the extra map functionality, namely having coordinates and being able to add map notes. They had a pretty cool little Quest Minion that would neatly show that you had collected 4/42 Troll Scrotes, but it's been removed from the latest version for some reason (also the display of the actual numeric level in your quest log). The Easy Fishing tackle box is also useful to me. However, it is a very active mod, and the delivery system is pretty smooth; I suspect I might discover that most mods break with certain patches, but they might not be as quick to update them.
Roc_ketboy mentioned that he uses Gypsy, mainly for the bindable buttons. I assume he means you can bind buttons to more than the default 10 keys, but I'm a slowpoke mouse man myself, so that is mostly moot to me. I'd be very interested in hearing more about it, though.
CTMod is also very popular, but I don't know much about it.
Basically, I got the first thing that was suggested to me, and have become complacent.
[Edit] Oh, Cosmos does have a nice selection of buff timers, which I find particularly useful.

It would appear Blizzard is trying to shut down third party progams, as they might be the cause of some of the horrendous lag...

Here is 2 screenshots of some features of the upcomming patch.

1) More UI bars to have up to 40 (I think) commands.
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/underdev/images/bubbles.jpg

2) A new quest tracker system (Look on right hand side).

The UIs are actually encouraged by Blizzard. They provide a UI editor if you are so inclined.

The third party apps they are targeting are hacks/cheats, not the homemade user interfaces.

And Cosmos here too. It'll do most of what's in that screen shot in addition to help you maintain your macros. (which I need to figure out yet) It already has the quest tracker. (if you remember to turn it on, doh!)

it wont cover all that cosmos does, just about 1/4 of it maybe. probably less. i use cosmos btw.

i like the chat bubbles as long as they don't get over-abused. the quest helper looks sweet, a lot better than quest minion. and the extra button bars look great, they have more space than cosmos' does. however, cosmos lets you move them and make them transparent (i set mine to 30%, they block the pretty view!) i'd hate to have every side of my screen boxed in... especially for those of us with pets and summons, their action bar gets in the way of those other bars.

As others already noted, Cosmos does much more than provide extra buttons. I don't use a quarter of the features it makes available. Granted, many of them are caster related and I am playing a warrior but still...

An additional benefit of Cosmos is that it is not just an Add-On but its also a framework. You can write your own modules and place them in the Cosmos framework. You could write directly to the API provided by Blizzard but then it would be a separate Add-On. By writing to the framework, you can add your module to those others have already written!

Of course, time spent designing, writing, and testing a module is time away from the game so my GF and I (both software engineers) have not done it yet...

Currently still using Cosmos and map notes + map notes gathering that tracks where I pick herbs. Would also be helpful to miners.

With the patch, I disabled Cosmos for a while. I've added a couple of other non-Cosmos add-ons though. Some were independent but I also added CT_RaidAssist when I went on a raid with some guild.

I'd given up on Cosmos since the previous patch. The extra button bars in Cosmos didn't coexist peacefully with the new bars Blizzard added, and I got tired of patch compatibility problems. Since Blizz added a quest tracker feature, the only thing I really miss is map notes and party members seeing my pet's health.
I'm trying to change the way I play as far as mouse use vs. keyboard use, so I might look into some other mods that would allow more extensive binding of keys. My current technique just does not cut it in PvP; it's a lot more hectic (especially for a hunter I think). I'm also just getting interested in macro usage.

New addons I've been looking at:

That one will require a change to addon memory usage. I'll post how to do that as soon as I find it. Supposed to be on the addon config window.

Anyone using a good raid addon?

Current list I use:
Flexbar
Auctioneer
MapNotes
MapNotes Gathering
SimpleSelfCast (no more alt+spell to cast on self, if no "appropriate" target is selected, it will self cast)

All-in-one-Inventory is giving me problems since I dropped Cosmos. :(

Need:
A Raid helper, I think I'll try CT_Raid

Not going too crazy until the 1.6 patch is out b/c I'll probably have to do it all over again. :(

Dawg
07-06-2005, 05:32 PM
CT_Raid is the standard for raiding. Just find out what version the raid is using and make sure you are up to date. You do not need the rest of CT_Mod to use CT_Raid so you can download and install CT_Raid separately.

The only mods I use are

From Curse-Gaming:
Sellvalue (shows the merchant buy price for any item you've taken to a merchant on any character. Once it learns an item, you always get the sell value in the tooltip.)

Reputation Mod (Shows your reputation as a number, not a bar. Also does this for rep gains when you do a quest. Did you know that killing the pirates just outside Ratchet yields you 5 points to ratchet and 1 to the rest of the cartell per if on that quest and that quest is yellow or harder, and 1 point for all all other times?)

From http://wow.allakhazam.com :
WoWReader (uploads characters and stats, helps maintain their database of item locations and such, and keep it up to date. Can also grab coordinates with the wloc command.)

Because IGE owns (circuitously so as to avoid detection,) cosmos and thottbot, I just won't use them.

Chairman_Kaga
07-12-2005, 07:29 PM
Try Auctioneer. You can have it scan AH and it will help you value your items to sell. It will also help you find deals if you are so inclined.

Chairman_Kaga
10-31-2005, 07:43 PM
Depends. Most times, yes. However, it's just an install of the new one now. Shouldn't have to reconfigure anything unless the game changes in a way that affects the tie ins of UIs. That has not happened though.

Dawg
11-01-2005, 11:01 AM
I've gone to using just the specific mods that I want rather than large frameworks. I have CT_Raid installed, but it is probably pretty out-of-date.
FishEase: autocasting
FishInfo2: track the rate of catches by area. Does not differ based on time or season though, so it is not perfect.
MapGatherer: essential for all gathering professions
MapCoordinates: when you ask 'where is so-and-so?' .. you often get answers like, '24, 56'.. .now you know what it means..
QuickLoot: lootbox comes up under your cursor instead of the far corner of the screen
QuestTracker: got it for the quick scroll (which has since been included in WoW) but keep it for some other nifty features
Wardrobe: extremely cool for anyone who has multiple sets of gear (in high end content, this becomes everyone); biggest drawback is that it doesn't handle having two of the same item well (e.g. 2 Topaz Ring of the Bear)
Scrolling Combat Text: cooler than it sounds, very useful when tanking and you cannot see anything on your screen other than a giant's kneecap (or is that his toe, or butt, or..)
some-mod-that-tracks-what-items-sell-for: good for deciding which crappy grey item to drop to pick up some phat lewtz.
I had a nice bag mod that tracked how much space you had available in each bag. Even color-coded so you could know at a glance when it was coming time to hit the vendor to sell your furry tails and what-not...

Chairman_Kaga
11-16-2005, 02:55 PM
It is very unlikely that an addon can corrupt anything. It can cause funky in game problems and/or crashes, but since there are no executables involved, shouldn't corrupt anything.

Do not install any addons that require or use an executable.

As for the patch, I had no problems with any of my addons.

Well, I finally figured out what interface I like. Here is the list:

1) Auctioneer
2) Rightclick Selfcast
3) Titan panel: This one lets you show clock, change, and a few other items/points in text form and is really configurable once you figure out how to do it.
4) Autobuff: Just what the name says "AUTO". Whether it is weapon buff or not. Also works on the run. Although I haven't fully played with this one yet but so far I like it.
5) Moveanything: I like this mod the most. Allows you to move any part of the interface you like. And I mean any. :D

Not sure if anyone has tried this yet (I haven't..am going to this afternoon). Catalyst (http://wowinterface.com/downloads/fileinfo.php?id=4827) is supposed to dramatically reduce zone load times. From the author:

"I wrote this as a quick hack* to improve zoning time until the event system is optimized in 1.11 because I found the alternatives inadequate. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked so I decided to make it public.

To give an idea what kind of improvement you can experience, I did my tests zoning from Stormwind to the tram and back. On average, my zone time without Catalyst took 14-18 seconds. Once I enabled Catalyst, my zone time dropped to 1-2 seconds.

I was finaly able to login again and I did a few more tests. I wanted to zone into BWL, but something is aparently wrong with my server right now so I had to settle with BRS.
Without Catalyst enabled: 50 seconds
With Catalyst enabled: 7 seconds"

There was some question as to whether this was an allowed addon which has since been answered here (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-interface-customization&t=361953&p=1&tmp=1#post361953) (it is allowed).

Me:
CT_Mod (various pieces of it)
CT_Raidassist
Auctioneer
Wardrobe (Though it's giving me automation problems)

DruidBar - keeps up a bar approximating mana while in forms
FishingBuddy - need to update - its throwing exceptions
Gatherer - not sure which version
Itemrack - you may want to try this if you are having issues with Wardrobe
Recap - stopped using DamageMeters when I got this
Scrolling Combat Text - updated recently, now shows overhealing inline
TitanBar

ZOMG, Nice! Half of us are in Prestidigitation now, Maratek, Little Joe, Doc, Shark and them are still in VSF.

If you want to move boxes, I think the easiest way is CTMod. I think Kaga uses xperl frames or something, it seems complicated to me to use though.

x-perl and bongos bars are really nice. Some like trinity bars better. Bongos lets you move mini map, bars, pretty much everything. X-perl is for the unit frames like party frame and such.

Look us up in prestidigitation or VSF.

CTMod is almost "needed" when you start raiding. Also I really like CTViewport.

I would add/change things one at a time to get a feel for what you like. There are also some really nice auction house and profession addons.

There are 7 of us with level 70's still in the VSF guild. Myself, Maratek, Rob Roy, Cranky, G.I. Jay, Dr. Strangelove, and Sharkbait. Bounty Hunter and Slip also play, but they have lower level toons. Here is a list of our alts:

Scroll down to my post (http://www.vsfgamers.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=12065)

Anyway, a little history: about a year ago VSF and Bloodhoof Prophets started a joint guild called Prestidigitation, which is where Kaga, Madsci, Yellowdog, Cowboy, Nixon, and Fence are (maybe some others, I don't know). Sharkbait and I were playing Alliance when the merger happened, and when we came back to Horde a few months later we found out that the old Call of Duty crew were back in VSF, so that's where we went. We have a good time, though our numbers are small.

Since Fennel is only level 45, it might be a good time to try another class if you're so inclined. I have a 45 priest and a 40 warlock i'm still leveling, and several others have alts we're playing with.

BTW, don't forget to apply your talent points; they were re-set once or twice in the last year.

As for addons, I use Titan panel, CTMod, Auctioneer, Atlas, and Decursive.

Behold my necromancy skills as I resurrection the dead thread! ok.. it was stickied but whatever.

I installed x-perl a while back to give it a whirl and I am very happy with it. Its easy to set up and allows you great flexibility in how you organize damn near everything. The feedback and info it provides during combat is great. I was never one for micro-managing my special during combat but I am a total convert due to the convenience that this mod provides. Two paws up.
