RuperTMac LvL38 Dwarf Hunter (Alliance)
Tichondrius PvP (Pacific Zone), High Population

The info on a PvP honor system in the manual is currently bunk, by the way. The described honor system to keep high level opponents from impetuously slaughtering you after you pass Lvl20 is not in place (yet?), but the penalty is no more than a run from the graveyard (no real benefit to winning, either). They are purportedly implementing Battlegrounds, a structured PvP game mode which looks at least interesting (check www.worldofwarcraft.com for preview). Running solo can be a bit more frustrating in PvP, but not impossible.

Blizzard recently lowered the instantaneous player limit, so many of the larger servers are over-populated. There can be a not insignificant login queue during peak hours (mostly less than 20 minutes). If you want to choose a server with a lower population, observe the population indicator (which I think shows the current number of logins, not the total) during this busy evenng window. As lag is not quite as troublesome here as in our normal fare, you may consider an alternate time zone more accomodating.

Maybe i'll join you fools once i get my 3rd character in CoH to 50 :p

By that time, you'll all be uber and can powerlevel me to the point where I won't know how to play my character. :D

I'm on the Draenor server non pvp (doesn't mean there isn't pvp btw) and it's medium load so you don't have to wait in queue for 15 mins before you get to start playing. Also have lvl 3 char on bloodhoof just cause I got other friends playing there.

lvl 16 Hunter in Draenor and that's mostly where I'll be playing.

OMG.

A 3rd player up to 50?

Hi, I'm MadSci and I'm addicted to CoH.

*all* Hi, MadSci.

Come on and join us on WoW.

Thanks RuperT and Bok,

Not sure I want to do the PvP servers. Every thing I have read about it, it sounds kinda nerfed.

I have a lvl 7 Rouge on Gilneas, though kind of a wuss not sure I like the class. I will try out the Draenor server, I have been wanting create a new char.

Bok, what side are you on Horde or alliance?

Where is Dawg and AirBrad? Are the LoC's playing WoW?

Earthen Ring for me! Its a role-playing oriented server and seems to avoid the most of the downtime that many PvP servers seem to suffer from due to high load. I cannot personally say that it is better than PvP servers, but that is what I hear from people who have played on both. The players tend to be more mature on average. I've heard of some players going overboard on the RP but I haven't encountered it and don't see how it would affect my gameplay anyway!

There is some PvP, but mainly between Horde and Alliance. There is dueling if you really wanna whack on another player but I'm not into that personally. I prefer quests, exploring, skinning, and long walks on the beach - if there is killing involved!

Dawg
(Swert - human warrior)

(EDIT) - Earthen Ring is supposedly located in the northern Virginia area, another reason for me to play there - good ping! they no longer list the server locations but I have friends who were in the betas when they did list them. Regardless, the game will suggest a server with a good ping for you and it selected Earthen Ring (which I was going to select from the aforementioned recommendations) so that settled it for me.

..damn read this thread kinda late

JOIN THE ILLIDIAN server!!! PVP servers are basically the same as non PVP ones, except that you dont have to flag or 'enable' PVP to kill other peeps.

Got a 60 Shaman already...working on getting uber gears in raid instances.

Also twinking my lvl 25 rogue atm.

LMK if you got questions.

omg alliance 4tl!! :P

undead quest are fun. i think you find it tough b/c you are comparing ur tank vs ur paper think caster when soloing. but WL gets alot better and funner once you get your kew pets around lvl 20-30s. and you would no doubt be invited to alot of grps to do instances b/c you can summon and use the succumbus pet to seduce mobs (for crowd control).

Its not luck - its hard work and perseverance. Ok, its perseverance anyway.. Assuming you earned a decent reputation you can get a 10% discount on your training and horse purchase to its only... 90gold! :P

I wasn't planning on get a horse right away but I found myself soloing more than I was grouping with my regular party. The added speed of a mount makes the travel faster and easier. My GF is jealous and wants me to help her get a horse (she is a level higher but cannot seem to manage to save her money). I agreed so long as she make getting the horse her primary mission until she gets it. Again she agrees. She then runs off somewhere on some quest while I'm farming an instance... I come out of the day with somewhere between 15g to 20g. She has... a couple of gold.. Hmm... *sigh*

Mobs are the monsters/creatures that you kill.

instances are dungeon /quests that are setup just for you.
So if you go into a dungeon you adventure will be unique to you

More info on WoW's terminology.

Thought we covered this in game. ;)

Instances are relatively new to MMORPGs (not entirely new but...) It is essentially a special area set up for you and/or your group. You will see no other players in your "instance". It helps alleviate high level players camping of bosses for loot and thus depriving lower levels of their "turn" at the boss.

Mobs are basically any free roaming critter you kill.

Farming - killing with the intent of getting specific drops such as wool or linen.
Ignus - to be a noob. (ie "I felt like such an Ignus the other night when I fell off the Zepplin")
Camping - hanging out in a specific area waiting for bosses to spawn to repeatedly kill said boss. Not always bad nor can you avoid it if the drop you need isn't obtainable by the whole group in one shot but considered bad form if you're doing it just for drops so you can sell them and thus depriving other players of their turn at said boss.
Train - butt load of critters pulled to one player. Player becomes the engine and the mobs the train.
Aggro - mob(s) turn to hit you. Usually a mob will aggro to the hardest hitter of a group. However, I'm learning there is "threat" associated to some of my spells which could pull the mob to me. :(

RuperT

Actually, 'critters' are specifically those friendly non-red-tagged beasts that will attack only if attacked. :P
I believe the term 'mob' is derived from 'mobile object'. How such nerdy terminology migrated into the mainstream parlance is beyond me; it must've been before gaming was so accessible to the mouth-breathers.
An instance is a small zone that will contain only your group (look for the big swirly blue portal). It will contain only your group and a veritable butt-load of nasties. In fact, if you leave your group while inside, you will be automatically hearthstoned out if you don't rejoin your group in a prescribed time (45 secs?). Instances are NOT soloable, unless you are of such high level that you would probably have no interest in entering anyway. The first instance you might enter on Alliance is the Deadmines, in Westfall (the entrance is a little way down in the mine).
'Aggro' is basically a mob's aggression level towards you. As Kaga states, high damage or specific spells can 'get aggro', or make a mob turn his attention towards you (healing spells will generally do it). Some classes (or pets) are designed with specific 'taunting' spells or effects; these 'tank' classes will 'hold aggro' even while other classes cause massive damage to the mob or heal the tank.
Hmm, what else... 'DoTs' are 'Damage over time' effects; ie, an attack does 50 dmg every 5 secs for 30 seconds. To 'res' is to resurrect someone's dead body. 'Roots' are spells or effects that prevent a target from moving.

How are mobs and npc's different? Are npc's specifically generated as an interface to the game or could a mob be considered an npc?

NPC refers to any Non-Player Character. This includes monsters (mobs) but also includes vendors, quest givers, and guards. Basically, an NPC is anyone that isn't being run by another player somewhere out there on the internet.

Technically, monsters are NPCs, but I think the term NPC is generally reserved to describe characters that you interact with.

We are getting dangerously close to earning a WoW forum... :P

Yes, usually reserved for a player that you interact with. MOB generally reserved for creatures you kill. Though both are technically NPCs, no one will understand you in game. Worse, they'll probably correct you and ridicule your for being a noob. :)
