I'm not biting on this one yet... just a few weeks to wait!

Not sure the video card would let you play any game you'd wanna... unless you want to take up wolf again!!!
If it's real, I might pick up one myself. I got my GF all of the Sims expansion packs for xmas and the ol ruby iMac is straining to run all six packs at once... But I'm with Roland on not taking the bait bit. I remember how we all got worked up when the first iPod was released, with the rumor sites all but predicting the reintroduction of the Newton - what a let down that was, though I guess the iPod has done ok...
Still I'm not buying into this rebirth of the G4 Cube bit - I loved that computer!

Whoops. I meant to agree with Bat about not taking the bait, not Roland. Roland, don't you work for Motorola, or am I completely off my rocker.
A buddy of mine that works in educational sales for Apple thinks it's going to be a home media computer with a possible TiVo tie in. I think he doesn't know what he's talking about as he works in sales and they get there rumors from the same place we do...

right, i asked one of the guys at the Apple store here if he knew when G5 notebooks were coming out and he said no one outside the design team and such would know until it was on the Apple website.

Dual core is like two processors in one chip? Been seeing references to that, but don't really have a sense of what kind of performance such chips offer... would it be like the dual G4 towers? And are they something an app has to be optimized for (like the dual G4 towers)?

My intent was a small amount of mediocre humor; I wanted to find an image of a 99¢ Big Mac and paste it here as an example of a "Cheap Mac".
I didn't deserve this - whatever you do ---- DON'T Google "Big Mac" and look at the first image.
You have been warned.
Don't do it . . . :scared:

Yes, Roland works at Freescale (former Moto chip division.)
Roland can tell you for a fact that G4 laptops are AT LEAST two years away. Future Apple laptops will use the new dual-core G4 Freescale is building. Look for these next fall. It's all about power consumption. The G5 draws WAY too much power for portable applications and will for some time.
Once again, Roland can confirm Apple is building a new device that uses a G4. He (we) don't know if it's a "set top device" or a cheap mac.
Rumors about both have been around for a while and valid arguments can be made for both.
Roland puts his money on the "cheap" mac.
Roland has said too much....
Roland makes Mac CPUs? well guys, looks like i dont want a Mac anymore :lol:

Low-end G4? The 400MHz? That's not nearly fast enough to do any gaming worth talking about, not even RTCW. My G4 laptop was 550MHz and 512 MB RAM and it was simply too slow.
OTOH, if by, "low end," they mean a 1GHz, THEN it would make a decent gaming machine, and only if you can get a Gig of RAM in. (Assuming a decent video card.)

Depends on what system you have, although Roland mostly deals with "raw" chips (Chips not yet attached to boards/cards) he does have access to certain Mac CPU cards......
ahhh... no good for us non-hardware-mucking types!!! i have a dual g5 2-ghz machine and a dual g4 1.5(1.4?) ghz.

Waitwaitwait... the article said, "Low-End." The HIGH end G4's were 1.8. It can't be that fast. If it is, color me there.

Hmmm, After some investigation it looks like Apple's "mystery" device may not be a "cheap" Mac.
I only have the specs for the chips Apple requested to go by.
PocketMac? :D

How many D-cells is that?
Angry Kid
01-06-2005, 03:34 PM
Depends on the current required.
P=IV; assuming two (2) 1.5V DC devices
V = 3V, P = 5W, therefore I = 1.67 amps.
I am assuming the Vcore voltage
You're typical D-Cell NiMH rechargeable has a rating of ~ 9Ah, so assuming it doesn't explode from exceeding its max current rating of 0.5 amps, theorhetically it could drive the processor (assuming internal resistances drop the voltage close to the 1.2 Vcore) and since you are taxing the battery at 3x its rated current draw (resulting in ~10% correction factor, i.e 90% heat loss), it might last ~30 minutes ± 10 min.
But that would be just for the processor.
You'd need a few more D cells.

why would you use D batteries in a pocketmac? rechargeable lithium ion would be the more probable choice anyways
