OK, how about a list of what y'all deem necessary to have in a kitchen. Everything from utensils to spices.

The very basics are obvious like stove, fridge, water, sink, salt, butter, etc...

More along the lines of:
You should always have ... handy in the kitchen. or Never run out of ...

Fresh Garlic
Whole pepper corns
decent stock pot
frozen veggies for emergencies
dried pasta of a couple types
vinegar
Sharp knives
hand soap
Number for pizza delivery
etc...

Colander - essential for pasta, makes a dandy fashion statement and attenuates mind-control waves
Grater - cheese (see above; Kraft grated parm/romano is an abomination and shall be cast out into the fiery pit)
Measuring cups & spoons (heavy stainless or plastic) - cooking is an art but baking is chemistry

For the edibles:
What RTG said - you can never have enough olive oil. It's like Scotch; don't buy the cheap stuff.
Capers - I like capers (bah! MASH has that covered already. Never mind. You don't need capers.)
Butter - real butter. Real, yummy buttery butter goodness. You know you want it.
Flour - all purpose.
All manners of cheese.
Elbow macaroni - oooh! Home made mac & cheese. mmmmmm . . .

hehe, beer and ashtray.

I usually shop for food each day as I only have a motorcycle and cannot carry lots of stuff. Besides, I use only fresh foods and very little canned goods, depending on the course.

My essentials are basically only in utensils, save for onions, garlic, tomatos and salt/pepper/sugar.

Cast iron skillets.
Heino just bought a new wok, which takes FOR-BLOODY-EVER to season...grrrr
wooden SPOOOOOOOONs.
Cuisinart.
copper pots for sauces.
a hand mixer (one of those old hand crank ones, I'm a cheap ******* but I like using old stuff like that).
some idiot left a 4,000 lb. mixer outside their storage unit for 3 days so I nabbed it. It rocks. Forgot the brand. It's a good one.

and my piece-de-resistance...my grandmother's 1952 toaster. 2 slice toaster that's made entirely of chromed steel. It's not the safest thing I have in the house, as it gets HOT when it's used and the adapter plug for it makes me quiver in fright...but I unplug that ******* after each use. It makes PERFECT toast. no uneven burn marks...all uniform toasting and guess what....toasts in under 10 seconds. You can turn off the lights in the kitchen and the red coils are so hot and bright it that you can read a book by it.

Scary. But damn they knew how to make kitchen items back then. None of this $10 Wal-mart toasters for me. I bought renters insurance for fire damage.

heheheeheh

Unfortunately, that implies one's mother can cook worth a damn.
