This one's a new one:

My G4 dual-1ghz won't start. I hit the light switch, and it turns itself off. The fan DOES turn on. I boot off an external firewire drive (it doesn't even HAVE an internal drive). I hit the PMU switch, but no go. I removed the RAM, and didn't get a beep warning of no RAM, so I'm thinking logic board.

Here's the part that concerns me:

I was running iTunes at the time, converting a new CD to MP3's. The CD in the drive at the time was, "No Doubt, the Singles, 1993-2003." I was listening to, Marylin Manson's, "The Last Tour on Earth," CD I had just finished importing. (I was listening to, "Dope Show.") The computer hung, and a dialogue popped up in several languages saying my computer needed to be rebooted. Anyone hear of copy-protection on those two CD's? I remember hearing of some that burned iMacs, but I couldn't find anything on these two CD's. (For Christ's sake, I don't even share music to begin with. I just don't want to have to change CD's every 45 minutes.)

Marylin Manson :melee: Vygramul

I've heard of copy protected Cd's before but none of those discs.

On a tangent, say the CD did purposley mess up you computer wouldn't that be considered hacking or some kind of invasion of privacy, for which you could sue the record company for damages or a new computer? I think the law is once you buy a CD you can make as many copies as you want, as long as you don't distrubute them or sell them for a profit. Like if you bought the Marlyin Manson CD but dont want to have to keep taking it back and forth between your car and home CD player you can make a copy to use in your car.

Can you boot from CD?

I have seen that pop error -- it basically draws over the screen, not a window or antying? scared the crap out of me.

Search google for "celine dion killed my imac".

Still under warranty? Got Applecare? Call Apple.

No, the CD's did not kill your Mac.

It's very likely your Firewire drive that is the problem.
Like Bat said, boot off a CD. (oh, and unplug the FW drive from the
system when you do that)

And install an internal HD!

I can't install an internal HD. It's a system capable of going classified, so I have to use a removeable drive system.
