After seeing Roland's screenshot in BF1942 thread I got thinking about it (posted screenshots) and some other instance where an ET screenshot thread was closed...

Why on earth is there an insistance that we use the Gallery for screenshots or threads that are image/photo in topic? Is it a monetary/bandwidth issue?

The only useful purpose of the Gallery in my opinion is a holding station for pictures for those who have no webspace, not to be the center of any image orientated discussions i.e. BF1942/ET/CoD/whatever screenies.

Using it for any other purposes just seems counter intuitive as most times people are frequently the forums which is where the words and the pictures should all be.

. . . not to mention the PITA it is to u/l anything into it. The little Java app seems to be very user un-friendly, i.e it doesn't work.

Whereas a 'Gallery' may have sounded like a good thing at the time, my opinion is that it has cut down on some of the jocularity/sharing/game experience, etc.

Where is the line drawn?

Roland, you start trouble just by looking at a thread, nevermind posting on it.

the main reason was to promote site traffic (outside of the forums) i believe. also, the gallery is nicer for finding a shot rather than searching or scrolling through dozens of threads to find the pic you want.

I beg to differ. Finding images in that gallery is a much bigger pain in the buttocks.

That gallery is NOT the dog's bollocks, it's just plain bollocks. It's rather difficult to use and even harder to find the images you want that are already on there.

But, I'm glad we have it.

Kind of.

But a screenshot thread is... a screenshot thread!!! So we can all have a laugh at the captures of some funnier moments etc.

It beats the hell out of trapsing away over to the gallery and having to discuss screenies indirectly than being able to quote them here.

It's all a bit silly really, but so is the refusal to sticky a screenshot thread when there's demand for one.

Gallery is only there to help those that don't have a place to store images and to house things like mugshots, photoshop contests, etc... that we want to keep.

There is NO reason that anyone should be directed away from linking an image from their personal web space. Linking from 3rd party sites is always suspect but...

Loin, not sure why you say there is a refusal to make a screenshot thread sticky. I have never seen such a request before this week.

Okay, couldn't think of a better word. How about "polite refusal?" :P

I'm not sure there has been a refusal, just a one instance that kinda put the lid on everything and gave me the impression that we needed to use the gallery...

I would think that screenshot threads are generally okay as long as the images are not too wide or the files too large... the Gallery can be a bit cumbersome to root around in, but what do you expect for free? And I think there was some expectation on the part of the staff that we put this portal together and no one really uses its features, except the ShoutBlock.

Maybe another case of the road to hell being paved with good intentions.

By the way, I like cake.
