I've been watching for the game Soldner for several months now and I saw that the retail version is now in stores.
I was wondering if anyone has tried it out yet and what they think of it?
I know the battlefields were supposed to be huge but I saw on the box that the max was only 32 players. Does anyone know if the map feels "Full" with that many players?

I tried the demo. Such horrible lag for me that I lost interest. The concept was pretty good.
Anyone that tries this, please give a detailed review.
And, moving this off to the "other games" section...

I cannot comment on the Soldner thingypit, as I had no idea it was even out. However, the "full" feeling on BF I'd say depends on the map. Some are small and 32 players really feels like a lot, such as in Battlefield 1942: Stalingrad....32 feels full for sure. But not so for BF1942: Gazala map....it's a HUGE map. BF:Vietnam is a bit different...most of those maps are on the small scale when compared to regular BF and 32 can feel like a good map of some solid playtime. so yeah, in 'Nam, 32 players feels "full"
<burp>
*edit* oh wait, were you talking about BF for the console games or for the PC? I was talking about the PC.

By BF I think he mean the Soldner battlefields and not the BF* brand of games.

A couple of other DSK members and I have been fooling around with the multiplayer demo for a couple of days. One of those guys bought the retail version and joyfully played all day yesterday (single player I think). One of our other guys claims 'unplayable lag' with the demo. As for me, the jury's still out.
I might pick it up anyway and check it out. A lot of it will be decided for me on non-play factors. For example, I'd like to find out whether I'll be able to host a server on my rental box, and how easily. What kind of gameplay modes are there? How moddable is the engine (very, according to my limited research thus far)?. The demo runs a pay-based version of Battlefields Conquest mode, basically. You recieve money for capping flags and killing enemies, which allows you to buy equipment (default spawn is only a knife and pistol).
Commander mode may have some potential. Also, cowering in a building while armor blasts it to pieces around you is pretty cool.
I'll probably be playing the demo for a couple of days (RuperTMc in-game).

This game looks great, thanks for telling me its out. The demo was awful but that is because they had protal issues. I think they fixed those.

After reading some on thier forums....I'd vote steer clear of this.
JoWood/Wings Entertainment appeared to have screwed up big time on this.
Tnaks can slide around like the DPVs in DC, your guy stops for almost 2 seconds after each hop. The glitches ehre and there are murderous apparently and the connection crap still is not fixed.

so youre saying (or trying to....) that we should wait for a few patches first?
Read any review you can find and it will explain just how buggy and awful this game is. What a shame.

ACK! You're right - did a quick google & from 1up.com:
"Soldner is frustration in a box."

I've got the retail version, and have actually been enjoying it.
The game definitely has some problems, but I've only played with the new patch and haven't had any particular connection issues.
I mainly bought the game out of interest (as a programmer) in some of their technology and plans. Reading the development notes, they have a particular interest in making the battlefield a little more persistent. Things like soldiers accumulating assets or properties, armies or clans fighting over shared territory, pure XML-based content, and sophisticated multiplayer scripting are what I hope will move this game out of the "25-minute killfest" genre. Sadly, I suspect there might not be as much additional resource allocated to the game, based on its poor market performance (although I hear it's doing well in Germany).
There are some extremely neat features, and I've definitely had many "Oh, cool" moments. Blowing the crap out of terrain and buildings. Knocking trees down with tank shells. Similarly, there are bad moments. My buddy and I standing toe-to-toe for about a minute knife-fighting, unable to kill each other. Realizing the LAW rockets and their kin fly in an arrow-straight line, to infinity as far as I can tell.
But, like I say, I do hold out some hope for the game. The mapping and terrain system is awesome and virtually infinite. The buildings and architecture are extremely convincing and fun just to fly over and check out. The weapons are varied and interesting (I couldn't believe one reviewer complained that there were "too many"). One notable weapon is the OICW super-rifle: in scope mode the thing will locate and outline unseen targets. Of course, when you realize it will locate you while hidden upstairs in a building, it becomes a little like wall-hacking and kind of silly.
We shall see. I don't mind taking a gamble on some smaller developer trying to push the envelope. Sure, EA or EPIC games are polished, but they should be. BF:V or Joint Operations are just the latest iterations of their smallest-possible-increment product cycle (BF1942 and Delta Force, respectively). Any day now, I expect BF to start having year designations, like Madden 2004. Unreal Tournament has already started this I guess.
I guess I'm just waiting for the next evolutionary step in online gaming, something I'm hoping is somewhere between current online FPSs and current MMORPGs.
Klytus, I'm bored....

I personally think most reviewers love to find a title like this on which they can heap abuse. They get the chance to break out their oh-so-clever hyperbolic one-liners that they've accumulated over the last couple of months, just waiting for the next industry despised whipping boy to come down the pike.
It's not that bad. If you have a server full of jackasses, it will suck like any other. If you have a group of decent gamers, it can be a lot of fun. There are cheap weapons and cheap tactics. Campers camp, whores whore.
I wouldn't particularly recommend that anyone buy it at this point, but I wouldn't recommend against it, either. If you do buy it, be sure to visit The Death Swamp. :swg:
One of the things that immediately turned me off after reading the reviews is the lack of players, servers, and community. Not that I want to be a raving fanboy for the latest most popular game but not having places or people to play with would be pointless. I am also pretty picky and I know that all the bugs combined, no matter how small, would turn me off. I may try it when the price drops but until then no Soldner for me.
And RuperT, I totally agree that online FPS gaming is stuck in a rut. Hopefully there will be a groundbreaking game soon. Maybe Battlefield 2? Or a HL2 mod? Who knows...
