What do you find the best way to organise your collections?
Currently, I have all my files in one folder, listed by filename '(Artist)-TrackTitle.mp3' - I think I want to get away from that and organise them a bit better but I've yet to think of a decent method.
So, I thought what better than to ask all you pirates?

Well, I organize my folders into how much will fit onto one CD.
For example, if only 700 mgs will fit, I create folders with all the bands in an alpha-split and name them:
0 - Aa
Ab - Az
Ba - Bz
etc.
that way, if I want to make a quick CD, i'll just drag and drop an entire folder.
If I have a lot of songs by one artist, I make the folders named after the artist
Black Flag Aa - Ga
or on Album title if an entire album is huge, like The Beatles Anthology.

I organize mine by Artist/album/track-song-title.
That way if I replay them, I can replay them in the order they are on the CD.
When I cut mine from CD, I use MusicMatch Jukebox which will use the CDDB to pull the track/artist info. (not 100% accurate but beats the hell out of doing it manually)

Are there subdivisions within each of the band spilt folders? Say, a folder for each band... then a folder within that for each album etc.?

Me too. When I rip from my CDs iTunes does it automagically, so I just went back and did the rest...

I do it in cd-sized folders, like SK.

I keep mine in sub folders like mp3s\artist\album\track
but I run a script to copy every individual mp3 to one ..."mp3s\all" folder.
It takes up twice as much HDD space but I then I can listen to them all in a shuffled pattern. I haven't found an app that lets me do this with its "playlist" feature. Winamp almost does it. the latest version just might.
I kinda do Dr. Green*'s method with out the dupes I just dig around till I find the songs that I want to put on my player (even though it holds about half my collection).
You can try 1x1 player for playing all mp3 in a folder and sub-folder (at least I think it will do the sub-folder thing) really small player easy interface. But over all not as good as Winamp.

There can be. But I usually don't as sometimes I get a hair up my bum and just feel like burning off a copy real quick like...giving my CDRW drive a what for. And opening and closing numerous folders is kind of tedious.
I have all my songs named meticulously though, because I'm a taxonomic p.h.r.e.a.k.
Artist - Album - Track # - Song Title

I organize all mine into a my music folder. Then I make a folder for every band. Some folders containing one file, some empty and I need to get around to them. The files in their fold are Artist - CD - Title.

iTunes does exactly that, if I understand you correctly.

When I rip from the cd or buy from the Real Music Store, RealPlayer10 fills in all the info for me. Mine is all organized by mp3s/artist/album/track.

As I moonlight as a DJ and have about 20,000 songs, (Bless you easynews.com) I do the same as the others with one addition:
Genre/Artist/Album/Tracknumber-title
Example
Rock/Korn/Follow The Leader/01 - It's On
I need to do the Genre separation to help with Djing. Also, once you aquire a large library, it helps TREMENDOUSLY to keep them by Genre. Recently, I had to break out my Hip Hop and rock folders into sub-genres cuz they were gettin too big.
Hope this helps.

The latest version does. So does Media Player 9. So does music match so does pretty much any modern MP3 player. Tag & Rename will make standard M3u lists out of your entire library as well as do a reverse lookup for all of you correct tag info. You can get a (AHEM) Completely "Legal" copy on the newsgroups.

i have an entire hdd set apart for mp3s, since i was running out of room on the shared games/mp3 drive. they each get their own now :D
i have the structure like this: first is 2 folders, 1 for iTunes d/l's that are still in AAC format, other is for mp3s. the mp3 folder contains a 'Game Music' and 'Music' folder to separate my numerous game sdtks from my regular music. any misc songs i d/l that arent full albums go just in the mp3 folder. the 'game' and 'music' folders contain a folder for each artist, and each artist's folder contains a folder for each album, which contains mp3s labeled 'track # - title.mp3'. the game and music folders also contain all the playlists ive made for each album so that i can just pop up the folder via a shortcut key on my kb, double click the playlist and winamp opens and starts playing :)
i use musicmatch jukebox to rip cds into .wav files, and then use razorlame to encode them into vbr mp3s. thats cuz im leet 8) ;).

Does it take you 37 minutes to find a phillips screwdriver in your house? Just curious.

I've got them stored in an MP3 folder with subdirectories of artist/album/tracks, but, if I only have 1 or 2 mp3's from a certain artist, they sit in the root. Not wasting time making directories for artists I don't have too much from.

yeah, for DJ/dance mixing, I have a whole other setup where I copy files to.
Which reminds me, I need to make a few new mixes as soon as I get my PC up and running again.
