Anyone else cynical enough to think that bush has bin laden and is just waiting to show it off to the public to boost his chances of winning re-election.

Wasn't there some kinda conspiracy theory like that with Reagan, Carter, and the Hostages? Before my time...

Don't know about that but I know we stalled the capture of noreiaga (sp) in the panama invasion so we could take the land before we captured him.

No, I think he is talking about the 'October Surprise', in which a release of the hostages held by Iran was negotiated but their release delayed to not benefit Carter in the election - or something like that. Its one of those conspiracy theories that there really isn't any evidence for but will live on in perpetuity. I found a website but didn't assess its quality - check it out here (http://www.btinternet.com/~nlpwessex/Documents/coupreaganbush.htm).

I think the more important tid bit here is that the French are in Afghanistan with us. That's not something you hear about. Those Frenchies are softies... we need our freedom fries! You're either with us or against us! :? wtf?!?!?!?

Hey, for all of the jokes I make about the French, we've been allied with them longer than with Great Britain. I just can't help myself. And the 'with us or against us' crap is pure John Wayne bluster and bravado.

You're just ticked because they make better wines than Canadians do. :P Except for those Niagara Ice Wines, they're like candy.

Never had white burgundy before; I'll have to ask our friends in Switzerland to see if they can bring over a few bottles next time they're up.

Well, the Louisiana Purchase involved a huge amount of territory that extends far beyond the bounds of the State of Louisiana. So, if they are going to make that case they might as well try to grab it all! :P

I have to agree that the 'with us or against us' stuff is nonsense. The world is not black and white. Is Pakistan with us or against us? They sell nuke sekrits to damn near anyone but that's ok 'cause they 'helped' us hunt for bin Laden. Is Saudi Arabia with us or against us? They reward the families of suicide bombers, breed terrorism, and foster an oppressive society but they do let us use their territory for staging attacks against Iraq on occasion. And now we have to ask is Spain with us or against us? They assisted with the war versus Iraq but with their change in government, they promise to be less helpful (though they do plan on retaining a "cordial" relationship). The list of questionable allies is long... it reminds me of the 80s when we had corrupt dictators, uh, I mean fine bastions of democratic principlies, around the world that we paid off and considered allies.

I meant we'd be a member of the Commonwealth, have a parliamentary government, and the queen's mug on our coins as we'd never won the Revolution without the French.

You mean like Noriega? Or Saddam Hussein? Or Osama bin Laden? I'd like to find out exactly who we're propping up now, so that we can get ready to fight them in another 15 or 20 years.
