View Full Version : My Geforce TI4200 is dying I think...

This just started yesterday consistantly but it has been doing this intermittently the last few months. Whenever I play or run anything especially 3D intensive my screen goes, well, bezerk. Weird colorful lines and patterns shimmer across my monitor (almost like Atari games) and I suppose Windows locks up because I can't see it anymore, just these weird, almost RGB colors. I guess it could be described as a hardware failure because it seems to be happening outside the Windows OS, externally.
It happens about 2-5 minutes after playing BF1942 and during 3DMark 2003 and 3DMark2001. I've taken the card out, cleaned it, cleaned the contacts, looked at the monitor pins, futzed with 3 different driver sets from Nvidia, changed AGP apeture sizes etc. The card is not overclocked in anyway either.
My guess is the fan is going and not being able to suffienctly cool the GPU but I dunno. Any one know of a good place to get a replacement fan or possible just heatsink for a Geforce 4 TI4200 card?
I went out and bought a 9600 just to hold me over. It posts about a 1100 point difference (8100) in 3DMark 2001 compared to my trusty TI4200 (9200) but I do dig that it is fanless. Makes my computer ALOT quieter!

here (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=35-110-103&depa=0)
There's others too, this is just the first one I came across. I replaced my old chipset with it, but it's about the same size as those used on many vga cards.
Whatever you choose Hobbot, get ball bearing and not sleeve bearing.
And there's a whole bunch more here. (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?catalog=62&DEPA=0&submit=property& mfrcode=0&propertycode=&propertycodevalue=3189) And some have pretty lights. Oooooh...ahhhhhhhh.

I had the same problem with my ti4200 Hobbit, it's definitely a heat issue. I opened up my case to see if the fan was running, and it wasn't. So I added a case fan on the side and all has been well since.

I bought 1 of those and one of these
http://www.directron.com/ccba4p.html
Wasn't sure which would work best and both are under $20.
I'm using the Antec one right now but I plan to compare both.
Both are copper.
So far I'm real happy with the Antec model.
The Thermaltake is a 1 sleeve one ball bearing fan,
while the Antec is pure balls.
The Antec plugs directly into an available 4 pin molex plug off your power supply,
bypassing the 2 pin connector on the video card itself.
Be careful removing the old heatsink and fan assembly.
Mine was really on there.

Y'all may know my saga with the ti4400. I went through 2 of them, same symptoms as Hob-bot and it was definitely heat (cracked the case, used house fans, would work for awhile, then even that wouldn't do anything). So on the third card(luckily, they were still under warranty), I got the exact same thing Lionheart linked to above, and put it on the card as soon as it arrived from the manufacturer. I didn't have one problem after that.
Yep....my old 4200 did that as well...I put a new fan on it....helped a little....Then I started playing DC and it hated that game...it would bug out every 10 minutes....I finally gave up and put in my little bros computer and underclocked it.....it works well for him..exept when he plays DC :(

The patient will be undergoing surgery today for their new fan.
Dr. Green & Dr. Dreidle are asked to make themselves available during the procedure should any complications arise.

Please have a seat.
While the surgery went well, without any complications, it appears the condition is worse then what we estimated. Despite the transplant of a new GPU cooler fan, the card locks up on 2 other computers.
Time to buy a real new card now :D

Unfortunately the card will not play anything 3D intensive until it locks up.
Time to put it up on eBay I guess
