View Full Version : Best DVDRW?

OK, so I crapped out on my quest for a new video card. Now I am shopping for a good, solid DVDRW.

Here are my criteria of concern:

1. Dependable. I hated my first CDR driver because it would lock up my machine on Buffer Under-runs. Want something that will not crap out on a burn. DVD media is pretty expensive compared to CDR stuff. So, I want something that will work a vast majority of the time.

2. Format Compatibility. I don't know if there is a drive with "universal" playback compatibility, but the closest I can get to it, the better.

3. Support. Want it from a reputable company. I love Plextor drives and have not had a lot of good experiences with anything from Sony.

4. Availability. I don't want to have to scour the Internet for it.

5. Price. Important, but least important of this list.

This is the one I have and it has never ever had problem 1.

Plextor has always had the best burners, I doubt it will fail you. And that model is the best dvd burner you can find, doing both + and -.

OK, an addendum... Should I pull my current DVD player or my CDRW to put the new one in? I have a 16x OEM JVC LiteOn DVD drive and a 48/40/24 OEM Hitachi CDRW.

And it'll still be less expensive than any high-falutin' video card. You can spend the extra cash to rotate the tires on your trailer. :swg:

I would. The only thing that 16xDVD drives help is data DVDs. All video dvd's still run at 1x. The Plextor does 12x for DVD's which is plenty fast considering there are very few if any programs that uses data DVD's

As far as replacing you CD-RW drive I would do it too. Your current one reads cd-roms at 48x, burns cdr's at 40x, and burns cd-rw's at 24x. That Plextor does 40/40/24 so you wont see much difference there.

So in short yes replace both your current drives with the all-in-one Plextor.

I just bought this here (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-012&depa=0) and here is the review (http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/134). For $105 free shipping and an an 8x burner to boot you can't go wrong.

I think he is asking which secondary drive he should keep, the DVD or the CD-RW.

Hmm...would keeping the DVD help in making DVD to DVD copies on the fly? I guess that would be my question.

Most DVDRW have slow CD-R/RW speed but if the Plextor has a 40X CD-R time, thats plenty adequate so I think I'd say ditch the CD-RW.

JT, get this one (http://www.apple.com/powermac/). Trust me, the software that comes with it is awesome and the burner is extremely reliable.

You mean house.

I prefer fewer internal drives. Less powered hardware, less heat and less wiring. I would scrap the DVD and CDR in favor of the CDR/DVDr drive. HOWEVER!!! Depending on what you do with your CD-R drive. Most of the combo drives are not 100% compliant with certain burn/read technologies. Meaning, if you want to make backup copies of your games, the combo drive will not work. Most people do not have that need so it's a non-issue. They ARE fully compliant with your normal tasks/needs.

I have the Sony equivelant of that plextor. No problems here with the exception of when I need to make an image of one of my game CDs. Cheap Lite-On CD-Rs are great for that though.

Now I want a DVD+/-RW as well but in the above link, is the 50$ rebate already accounted for? or Do I pay $165 or $215 (and get $50 mail in rebate afterwards)?

If you mean purely in terms of DVDRW's then I have no idea. If you mean generally, then yep, I'd say they have a good name.

They're a good "inexpensive" brand. My store has sold a whole boat-load of LG's to people who don't want to shell out big bucks for higher quality name brands. So far we've only had to send one back to repair, and that was the store burner (which we routinely abuse the heck out of  ) LG on the whole is much MUCH better than when they used to be known as Goldstar

I otherwords, I recommend LG for inexpensive solutions. At least over competition like liteon.

Thanks for the links, but I'll wait a little bit and get a plextor
