So, it turns out my anti-virus is so old it doesn't work with Win XP.

Seeing is I need a new prog I just wanted to know what's the best out there.

Also, I'm not opposed to using any freeware antivirus while I save up to buy something else.

Suggestions?

Norton Anti-Virus... and you can get a great deal on OEM software on eBay. I bought a sealed copy of Norton System Works Pro Edition for about $24 on eBay last year.

What Stickbooooooooy said. I think Angry Steve-o Kid uses it too.

Very trusty, had absolutely no problems or conflicts. :D

I don't trust my virus protection to free programs... just a phobia of mine. You get what you pay for.

I use the Symantec/Norton Suite of AV products. Very satisfied with it.

Well, since I VPN in to work, company pays for and maintains my definitions for NAV. Can't complain.

Can't you DL NAV for free and get a couple months worth of virus updates free? You used to be able to. Might hold you over until you purchase one.

Norton and McAfee both have their drawbacks, chief among them being so slow to scan large files. Norton seems to be a little better and I have never like McAfee personally.

You think large files are bad. Try an Exchange Information Store with mailbox scanning turned on. :( Worse than virii themselves.

I use nothing at home :D - I'm careful of what I open/download, and I check here online for free whenever I'm in doubt:

http://housecall.antivirus.com

Anyone who is looking for a solution for business, check out their Trend Micro Client/Server/Messaging suite, they offer a 30 day trial period thats 100% feature complete. Officescan has got the smallest footprint out of all of the virus scanners I've tested, and it doesn't suck up CPU cycles like some of the other virus applications do with an active scanning agent running. It was one of the last anti-virus suites I evaluated at the end of the year but it ended up being the best overall for what I needed.

Symantec and McAfee both have free online scanners if you ever think you are infected. I like Symantecs which can be found here (http://www.mqcis.net/crportal/modules.php?op=modload&name=Web_Links&file=index&r eq=visit&lid=7).

Wow, thanks for the responses guys!

I've never even been to the Ebay site, but since I've checked it out I found Norton for $7 CAD.

I've also downloaded Stickboy's suggestion.

Not necessarily. There are many exmples of freeware or open source programs that are far superior to similar commercial programs.

I use NAV on one of my systems and AVG (the free AV from GriSoft) on another. AVG works just as well and steals a lot fewer CPU cycles. However, my main machine is now a Linux box and doesn;t have an AV program ;)

One other thing: you can find NAV or McAfee VirusScan advertised for free after rebate(s) almost every weekend in the Sunday paper (in the U.S., anyways). Ususally there are 2 rebates, one of which will be an upgrade rebate that requires you already own some AV program.
