my comp has started acting all messed up lately. when i go into a folder with alot of files, and i start clicking around, it will just freeze up. also i have always had to start up the comp and then restart, otherwise the comp would mess up and crash. here are the specs, maybe they will help.
amd 2400
albatron mobo
gainward ti4200
western digital 80 gb HD
1 512 stick of pc2100
1 512 stick of pc3200
i defragment all the time, scan for spyware/viruses all the time, i just dont know whats up, i have a feeling its the motherboard, because i took my bros vid card and tried it out and i have the same problem.
thanks for the help in advance.

could be the mobo, ive never heard of 'albatron'
how long have you let it sit once it freezes? i know when i open my docs folder or my music folder (winxp home mind you), that it sometimes hangs for a couple seconds while it loads all the gigs of data contained within the folders.

Yeah. I would also imagine that any time you use a drop down menu to pick a drive, you wait a while too since you have all those CD drives in your machine.
Sway, how many files are we talking about? Does it do it EVERY time you go into the same folder or just occasionally? Have you performed a chkdsk on your HD (or equivelant for your OS) lately? Bad sectors on the HD can occasionally cause the OS to freak when trying to locate or read a file.

im using windows 2kpro, it happens everytime, and theres not that much in the folders, maybe a few big files and a couple small ones, nothing that big though. im not talking gigs or anything.

My buess would be bad sector on the disk then. Try running checkdisk, chkdsk, scandisk or whatever the heck it is for 2K to run a sector check on your HD.

ran the scan and i still get the same thing. im almost possitive it has to be my mobo.
still up for suggestions though.
if worst comes to worst, any recomendations on amd mobos?

test your power supply first. if it's a cheap generic psu chances are the 12 and 5 volt rails are fluctuating and that is causing your troubles. after that the next culprit to check would be memory......if you have 2 sticks in there now remove one and see if it happens. then reinstall that one and remove other one..........if problems persist then i would blame the mobo.

Try popping out the stick of PC3200 DDR with out knowing the model number of the MB I would guess that it doesn't fully support 3200 and mixing RAM can cause problems.

Do you have two IDE channels on that motherboard? Might be worth swapping the channels.
Just does not sound like a mobo problem. Normally a mobo problem will be random.
Also, what do you use to defrag? I used the windows XP degragger and it corrupted a BF1942 map or two and a few other things. I had to reinstall some things.
I have no experience with AMD mobos but I hear good things about Asus. Sponge or one of the others may be able to chime in here.

How comfortable are you with a re-format? It's your cheapest way. Also, I doubt it's the mobo. Just sounds like a Windows issue to me.

Do you have access to another hard drive you can use? Somebody got one they can loan you for a week?

Try checking the System and Application logs in Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer to see if you are having any repeated hardware or software issues to cause this. Many times, disk access problems will show up there if the drive is taking too long to respond to a request.

it shows that there is an often ocuring error..... SOURCE: service control manager.

and it says in properties
The nVidia WDM TVAudio Crossbar service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
so i dont think thats the problem....

try not using the nvidia driver but the appropriate brand for your video card. It looks like the driver isn't compatible with the card you have. Also it could be that win 2k doesn't like that specific driver.

uhm correct me if i'm wrong, but when this happens to me, the first thing to do is test the ram. thats a common procedure. then proceed to a full disc cheking cycle, with a good program, not the windows crap.
after that, think of it this way 'did you bought the motherboard at fry's?(outpost.com)' if the awnser is yes, then run and stuff it up their ... throats.
if it is a via chipset based motherboard, you gotta have 3 things in mind:
1. you gotta have PERFECT voltage so it doesn't do funny things.
2. you gotta have the 4in1 drivers.
3. some people have problems with the 8mb buffer wd (i know i did).
also, wich nvidia card has the nVidia WDM TVAudio Crossbar, because that is something that only tuners have, mine sez ATi WDM TVAudio Crossbar.
also, check the folder with the problem, and delete the .inf that is hidden, it may be that, and also the thumbs.db. they both seem to get fu**ed up very often (my bro collects pron pics, and the folders kinda crash the pc for a couple o secs).

http://www.memtest86.com/ for a good freeware version.
If you can get your hands on ami-diag that's good too.
After reading the above posts. My gut instincts are screaming bad HDD blocks. W2K uses chkdsk BTW, which IMO is lacking.... ("Stage 1/3, problems found!" What problems you stupid $*@.....) I believe it needs to be run with a '/f' flag to initiate full scan.

Does Win2k have indexing? If so, I'd try turning that off. Also, not sure if it has prefetching like XP, but that's another possible cause of sluggishness.
