So, I've recently upgraded to WinXP from Win98, which means the mandatory screwing around with settings and programs.

In the course of this, I know I will eventually encounter serious problems. I'm a sucker for the "what does this do" routine, and have found myself in trouble on many an occasion.

Now with Win98, when I got into a problem I couldn't get out of, I just restarted the computer from the Safe Mode Dos prompt, and typed Scanreg/Restore and picked a registry setting that I know worked. Problem solved.

With XP, is there a similar bail out?

(I know it's been addressed before, but couldn't find post)

There is a tool under Programs > Accessories called System Restore.

You should be able to go back to a good version of your system using this tool. You can also, if I remember correctly, manually use this to make a backup/checkpoint just before you make changes.

You are correct on both counts. I strongly suggest making a new 'Restore Point' before downloading any new video drivers. Just look in 'Help and Support', and there's a shortcut right there.
