There are some (http://www.brothersoft.com/Business_Spreadsheets_Download_List_1.html) shareware (http://simplythebest.net/shareware/business/spreadsheet_software.html) spreadsheets out there; don't know how much functionality it actually has unless you cough up the $$$, though. :|

There is also OPEN OFFICE (http://www.openoffice.org/) - it was featured on TechTV a couple weeks ago. It's a freeware (supposedly) MS Office-compatible suite of apps. Might want to give it a try.

I'm pretty sure that will open Excel as well as word files and the good thing is that it is free.

Have you tried the MS Excl viewer? Its a free download and can open 97/2000 excell spreadsheets. Dont know exactly what you want to do but give it a look.

If worse comes to worse, one of us who has Excel can open them and save in a different format.

Got Office Pro and Adobe Writer at work if need be. If you need to manipulate the files, 'nuther story.

you, possibly may actually be able to open them in a web program, like dreamweaver, etc ... or even in a browser... as excel is essentiallly a table format ... but that is a last resort

If you have access to a more modern release of Linux (7.2 or up), you can use Gnumeric or KSpread to try to open and manipulate the Excel files.
