you know i once wondered why they made all these WW2 games and no WW1 games, then i remembered that WW2 was basically WW1 with better weapons and vehicles, and more interesting theaters of operation.

I always thought WWI would make an interesting FPS. Sow, but interesting. Mustard gas, anyone?

I had no idea this was available. Thanks.

I'm currently trying my hand at making a Maginot Line map or a Galipoli map with trench fighting, but I am having to use either Vanilla or DC weapons and vehicles (even though trench fighting with either one of those would rock, especially vanilla with the tanks).

But it's proving a pain in the arse coming up with stuff outside of the trenches. Especially on Maginot Line. Galipoli will have a beach (though I'll have to have mountains on both sides of the trenches, thus blowing my terrain accuracy to smegs).

Question is, could we live without our automatic weapons? I think the only auto weapon in WW1 was crew served. Hmmmm... need to start eating my Wheaties... ;)

Upon further study, this looks like it could pwn even CoD! Why? Because it'll have a bunch of dead horses on the battlefield, which is much more gruesome than cattle! (http://www.battlefield1918.de/forum/?do=showthread&id=626&s=e00a4abfa90551f3020f865bae 531f11&s=e00a4abfa90551f3020f865bae531f11)

Yes, Puppy, I actually would love the bi-planes. <Not going to rise to that joke> And the historical accuracy seems to be a fine point with these people, so I'm thinking that this may draw even more people into the game. It looks like they have some pretty talented peole working on it, and I'm looking forward to giving it a shot. Mmmmmm, dogfight with a Louis Gun rattling in my ears.... I wonder if you'll be able to stall your plane on a sheer vertical ascent? Hammerhead, here I come.

I agree, with all that. Germans tend to be more fond of WWI as that's the most recent war in which they had a legitimate fight, and didn't try to conquer the world and wipe out races of people.

Or so I like to tell people.

you get the cheachat! this is the worst MG EVER! the craftmanship was so bad that no 2 guns were alike. the clip had cut holes in it and it was issued that way. hello? trench fighting? mud? not good for guns. made by the french this weapon had a tendancy to jam multiple times BEFORE you expended a SINGLE clip. they also tended to backfire hurting the gunner more than the target and they were inaccurate..very inaccurate.

You do appreciate that this war didn't happen 10 minutes ago, right?

I bet if you had been around at that time and held one of the guns you berate in your hands, you'd be marvelling at the 'so bad' craftmanship.

Raptor, some people appreciate the way war was fought - man-to-man and the terrible difficulties and conditions these poor men faced on both sides. Technology has failed you. :P

this is from the History Channel from the mouth of a weapon expert/historian. it was bad even by WWI standards. The US had the BAR but didnt want the germans capturing/copying this state o' the art weapon. (it was back then). the British had the Bren(pr something like it) but they didn't let us use it. so we had this. on a side note it was french made.

Yeah, but the Spitfires have a tendency to drop instead of roll over. Every time I tried that maneuver at anything less than the highest altitude, it ended poorly.

In all of my recent vanilla wanderings, I have come to re-appreciate the complete pwnage that can be wrought by the original, WWII-era planes. The guns are every bit as devastating as a MIG (in game, anyway) and unless you have recently been trying to hide from the carpet bombing of a B-17, well... lemme tell ya... it sux0rs. Also, for anyone that complains that they are slow, a 1337 hax0r in a Stuka dive bombing from 10,000 feet is pretty darned fast.

Plus, I get no stinger.

I was just going to say that, Lion, the not-10-minutes-ago thing. A lot of the weapons of the time period didn't have interchangeable parts in them, RaptorLavender. But they were better than nothing. Most the time you didn't get to even use it anyway. Snipers were rampant and you didn't dare stick your head up. And when you did actually hear that horrible shrill of a whistle, you were up and getting pwned by the crew-serves.

War in the Trenches had to have been awful. I can't think of a worse condition. They had drownable level water in there, mud, snow, ice, rats, lice....the mustard gas, which is heavier than air, just rolled over the tops of the parapets and fell down into the trenches, brutally murdering all those without a gas mask and causing near-future deaths (in a few months) of the most horrible, lung-gurgling kind of those who wore surgical masks with their own urine on them to act as a filter. The enemy could lay mortar rounds directly into your line and if didn't hear the first one coming in, you wouldn't know it, but if you did, you'd jump into holes in the sides of the trenches like caves, but pray you weren't the first one in there because you'd get crushed to death or suffocate from all the people jumping in on top of you.

Sure, you got those nifty trench lighters to light your 2 cigarettes that weren't completely ruined by the rain, but then most of your cigarettes were rolled in regular paper...which back then was comparable to 90 weight double bond. Nice and thick. Like the green clould of chlorine coming at you less than 15 meters distant.

Yeah, WWI must have been one of the worst conflicts of modern man.

Some say War is Hell.
Others that
Hell is Hell
&
War is War

Who is Hell reserved for?
The rapists, the criminals, the sinners...
you will only find the guilty in the pit.
While in war,
innocence will be destroyed in the cross-fire.

Which is worse?

How ironic it would be if the one non-immune deficiency characteristic of mankind that allows him to reach equilibrium with his environment is the act of war.

Are we fighting the good fight?
Or just thinning the heard?

Oh, this could be a real good mod, without a doubt. Guess I'd better go out and pick up Gallipoli so I can watch it for the 85th time. Raptor, you should pick it up and give it a gander. You'll get to see trench warfare in all it's glory.Gallipoli (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000J11Z/qid%3D1073929485/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/102-1673635-5312132), a great movie, and All quiet on the Western Front (http://www.filmsite.org/allq.html) should give you some images to associate with the conditions of that war, and how short a life in the trenches could be. Seriously, you'll be glad you watched them.

Actually, that was an obscure line from S&G's "The Boxer", but yours will work, too.

In the clearing stands a boxer
and a fighter by his trade
and he carries the reminders
of every glove that laid him down
or cut him till he cried out
in his anger and his shame,
"I am leaving, I am leaving,"
but the Fighter still remains.

Here is a thread they just posted about the balloons substituted as flags! There is a screen shot link in the first post. Looking good. They say the map "Dogfight" is almost complete, but in the German section they say that the models and skins for all the aircraft and weapons will be tweeked with more polygons to give them a smoother surface. 3/4 of the maps are complete as well. Just waiting on the modelers to update the polygons. (http://battlefield1918.ngz-network.de/forum/?do=showthread&id=764)

They are continuing to tease me...

Will you make a movie to replace the starting one on BF1942? It wouldn't be too relevant, considering the WWI theme. You could have one of a pitched battle, with lots of fading images of men charging across trenches. You could get some good angled shots of your tanks and infantry, with focus on the change of weaponry.

You could also use this as a teaser trailer for the game.

And another thing, will the loading music be changed for BF1918? The BF1942 has got to be one of the best game tunes ever written, but it might sound a little tired on BF1918. Could you perhaps get a music composer to compose a more imperial battle themey kind of song?

Just another couple of ideas from your friendly neighbourhood Meadow!

Nice to see that they are taking it seriously. I'd like to see similar measures in politics. And they plan on using the entrenching tool as a weapon; this should be interesting for melee combat.

They're almost finished with the detailed work...most of the maps have been beta tested and approved, now they're doing the fine tuning with weapons and vehicles/new sandbags/objects.

This is looking fun! Did they have to crank the cars in those days; how funny would that be if implemented?! This kind of makes me wonder why we haven't seen a Civil War mod. Also, I wonder just how much leeway they have with character models in mods; could something out of proportion and cartooney (like the sketches) actually be done? Or do they have to follow the normal bipedal shape of BF (thereby excluding, say, a cavalry class with attached horse)? It's a shame that the rapid-fire delivery of new games to the marketplace outpaces the development of quality mods; by the time a well-done mod is 'perfected', the game is often kaput (even including huge sucesses like HL and BF). For example, these guys will probably be overshadowed by the release of BF:V; although it could be argued that this will mostly leave gamers of higher focus and quality (the yoyos typically have stubby little attention spans).
