View Full Version : Got Banned Today - Didn't get a chance to explain...

I was just playing a few minutes ago on mp_dawnville retrieval mode. I've only been playing CoD for a few days, and I've only played RE once on LAN, never online. When I first joined I thought it said that the Axis were defending, so while playing I never really went after anything, just killed Allies as I saw them. I thought the Allies were the ones that were supposed to retrieve like I said, so it was down to me and 1 teammate (bukchoi, sorry man  ) against 1 Allied player...because I thought that we were defending, i didn't think we could pick up the radios, so when choi picked one up I saw the star icon that indicates he picked up a radio and I shot him. Then I got banned before I could go back in an explain to AJ.
Sorry about what happened, it was a stupid mistake, but I've only been playing for a few days like I said, so I hope that you can forgive it and let me back onto your server :)

unfortunately tecknikal that is not the way me and the others playing at the time saw it. there have been complaints about you, marine, and your other ci buddy. you came on cursed after seeing the bot generated message at least twice. i personally witnessed you tk 2 radio carriers and it was at that time you were banned.
i don't have final say in the matter but in my opinion you should stay banned.

I TK'd 2 of them? I didn't know that. If I did it wasn't on purpose. Like I said that was my first time playing "re" on dawnville and had the team objectives confused. Give the new guy a chance? It won't happen again I can promise you that.

besides, the server is running a bot that kick-bans you if you tk someone unless they forgive or the admin removes your name from the ban list (its similar to the shrub bot from rtcw)

Hehe, I dunno if I'll be staying though. I made a mistake, got banned, found this site, signed up, and posted an apology and gave them my word that there will not be any problems anymore, but apparently I was so incredibly bad that I can't get a second chance :|

Firstly, having not been there, I can't comment on the decision of the person who decided it was best to ban you. Nor can I throw weight behind the unbanning of you.
I understand you are new to the game/mode, but it might have been an idea to a) read up more before playing; and/or b) confirming in-game with the other players what exactly your role is on that specific map/team.
We're a friendly bunch (for the most part) and are not looking to ban players at the earliest opportunity. Having lost our previous online gaming 'home', we are hoping that more and more players join as a member of the community and keep the servers full.
The vast majority of the community have been around for well over a year and usually know a troublemaker when they see one. Often it's not what it seems and can be someone innocently teamkilling teammates as they don't understand what is going on.
In hindsight, maybe it's a valuable lessson learned - especially where you're joining servers with rulesets and active monitoring - other people would say RTFM. :D

I read the info, I just got it mixed up. When you first join a server it tells you the objective for both teams..but I probably only read one of them and thought it was my role. It was just a big mix-up, and I apologize again.

First of all to Teck, sorry to hear this, but not really. I'm not an admin, but these things happen and we have rules in place for when this scenario occurs.
Rules are NOT meant to be broken, no matter what people might say. You probably would have had a better chance if you didn't get so many complaints against you, then warned repeatedly, then making your final mistake after the warnings. Hope things can be worked out if they are meant to be.
Last but not least, Raptor. You know the rules too. One of these rules is that the admin of a gaming server has the final say and they've all made their cases. There is no need to beat this idea like Raskolnikov in a Dostoevsky novel. You shouldn't berate the admins over their decisions, especially numerous times in a row. It's not right, especially in the public forums.
Raptor made one statement in favor of re-admitting Tecknikal. Its not exactly berating the admins. I like to think that the members of the community are entitled to offer their opinions on such matters. If he begins pestering, that is another story.

Besides NV said it was not his decision to keep him banned or not. Might I suggest a temp ban of like a week? Of course we only heard 2 people tell the story. Were there anymore witnesses?
BTW do you think a KH would take all the effort to come here post as many times as he has, hell he even registered? I doubt it, they would just move onto the next server to get banned from it.

Teck has done the right thing in moving this to PM'ing the admin to hash out the differences and state the case.
Anyone who did not witness said offenses should not speak up in defense of either Admin or "offender". It is not fair to either the admin or the offender.
Anyone who did witness the events, should PM the admin with their view. It should NOT be done in a public area. No good will come of it.

Yes, the CAN offer their opinions on a matter. (Should be an informed opinion though) But it's poor form to do so publicly thereby unfairly pressuring an admin to changing their decision.
EDIT:
Unless, of course, the admin choses to create a poll as to whether or not to ban/unban. Until that point, this is not a public debate. It's between the admin and the offender.
BTW - Anyone else take sweet pleasure in that it's NV on the "other" side of this debate for once? :D :D :D :D

Nope, to put it bluntly.

Agreed.

Agreed, but I would extend that beyond mere witnesses to those with, as you put it, informed opinions. That being said, I think we have made an error in discussing this as much as we have, and I share fully in that.

Tecknikal posted the initial message and various folks responded. This made it a public issue. Once the barn door was opened it would be inappropriate to slam on those who didn't race in with quick opinions. In retrospect I think the following should have happened:
1. Tecknikal posts his apology as a thread.
2. NV responds by announcing that the discussion will be addressed in PM and requests that the forum admins lock the thread.
3. Forum admin locks thread.
4. NV and Tecknikal work out the issue in PM.
One thing to keep in mind is that VSF Gamers is not actually running the servers that bear that moniker. The admins of the forums are not the same as the admins of the servers. Our's is a confederation of like-minded folk. The organization makes things a little clumsy. I think we can learn from this instance.

Dawg makes a good point.
All of the server admins (at least the ones I know of) have agreed in principle to follow the same rules as laid down by CCM (very slight modifications). However, it needs to be said that each servers admins have ultimate say over what happens there. We each have our personal peevs and preferences. For example, camping may get you a warn/kick on AK2's server or CoD, but I think you all know how I would react to such a thing. However, try dropping an N-bomb in the Dome and see how fast you are banned without warning.
Admins are trusted with the responsibility to make decisions for the betterment of the players on the server, and, hopefully, the community as a whole.
I kinda look at it like a franchise model... We all hang the KFC logo outside of our restaurants, but we are independently owned and operated. The buck stops with us... no one else.
That all being said, Kaga is graciously documenting the rules as agreed upon by the admins and the community so that each server can be run in the same way. I think there will not be a problem with keeping the CCM/VSF spirit alive, even though our servers are not owned by a single uber-entity.

It's not just me. It's all admins/mods trying to help out. I just drew the short straw and got to be the messenger. :)
FWIW - we're not trying to force the set of rules on any server. Just trying to make it easier for the server admins by having written rules for each server and easier for the community as a whole to have a similar set of rules for each server.

The problem comes in where players who are kicked or banned come to the forums for redress of grievances because at least two or three of the servers' rotating messages say rules are posted here. But they are not. The site admin staff has been discussing ways to rectify this without trying to set policy for each server.
Just to make it easy, we offered up the old CCM general rules set for the server operators to accept or reject as a general set of rules, subject to modification based on the individual games dynamics.
When rules are advertised as being here on the site and are not, it then becomes an issue for the staff here to address. Some server operators have decided to adopt the VSF name and promote the site and therefore the connection becomes a bit stronger, albeit still unofficial.
We would like to think it is a mutual benefit for the site to promote the servers and the servers to promote the site, but if we are not all on the same page, it just drives up demand for Xanax.
We have asked the server operators whose ingame rotating messages indicate the rules are posted here to come up with something. The staff just offered up the old CCM rules set as a starting point.
If they don't unanimously adopt them, they will then have the opportunity to post their own set. We have already gotten one very nasty email that we had no idea how to address because we were not involved, nor were we witnesses to the event in question. Needless to say the language and tenor of the email was such that we saw no benefit in responding.
Further, if no rules sets are forthcoming, we will eventually have to post a rules disclaimer so that we (who have no stake in the issue) don't get thrashed for something we have no part of. And based on comments here, looks like I need to start writing that disclaimer just in case.

As to the rules the CCM rules could be posted as a guideline with the appropiate disclaimer of these not being hard and fast for any given server but if followed will keep you in good stead.

oops, I've been so tied up in work the last few days I haven't had a chance to check the forums. :(
The COD server for the most part has been loosely following the rules that CCM followed, thanks in no small part to the VSF members who have been administering it. I know (at least for the COD admins) we haven't really had any formal communications on how to handle problem issues, so hopefully I can get some general things covered in the next few days. I know Kaga is working on finalizing a set of rules for all VSF servers, and I think that will help to outline the policies which should be followed as well. Maybe even one of these days when I finish my work I can start showing up on the server 8O
I do believe most everyone deserves a second chance if they ask for it, and I'm glad to see that tecknikal has come to ask for another opportunity to prove he can be a welcome player on our COD server. Welcome aboard tecknikal :)

No reflection on the server operators, but how popular opinion (read mob rule) on these things can get away from us sometimes, despite our best efforts.
The staff has addressed and heartily endorsed those suggested changes. We have drawn up your suggested addition and have also removed references to punishment, leaving that at the discretion of the individual server admin/operator (which can be added to the rules section for your server section if desired).
We have also added a section about posting this type of thread to dispute or protest a ban or kick. The staff did not address this early on because we had no servers operating as affiliates. But an addendum has been posted to the forum rules and to the suggested game server rules that punishment issues should be taken up privately with the appropriate admin.
We are excited over the response we have received from the affiliate gaming server operators re: this issue (primarily because we are too lazy to start from scratch). I just hope Artemis doesn't sue us for copyright violation... :D
