I have been having a problem with Direct 3d Applications lately... When i test Direct 3d in Dxdiag, the box is either distorted, shaking, or not even there. Direct 3d games wont work... OpenGL apps work though.
I have reinstalled drivers... the via 4 in 1, and direct x 9.0b, a couple times already, and nothing worked.
Gigabyte Ga-7VA
1400 Athlon
512 ddr ram
Geforce 5600 FX
Win XP
No errors occur when i run DIrect 3d games... Its just impossible to play with the distorted images...

Try going back to an older version of the NVidia drivers. MASH was having an issue with DX games and the latest FX drivers.
Wish I could remember the driver rev for you. I'm sure someone here knows it though.

I cant play any game ith any of the 45.23 and up drivers from Nvidia. I had to go all the way back to 44.03 before RTCW would play agian. Which sucks because the newer drivers ran much smoother than these older ones but at least theses older ones work.

low have you tried using the nvidia driver cleaner utility before installing new drivers?
if not google search for it, remove all traces of nvidia drivers then retest your machine.

Well I finally have a stable system with the 53.03 drivers. I booted into safe mode. Then went to Start>Search and searched all files and folders for nv*.* and deleted all instances that were located under C:/Windows and any of its subfolders.
After that I went to Start>Run and ran Regedit. Messing that up can seriously screw some stuff up so be careful. I went to the Edit menu and click on find and searched for Nvidia. Hit F3 to go to the next instance of it and keep deleting them all til there are no more.
This should remove all traces of any Nvidia stuff in your system. Reboot the computer and run the Nvidia driver installation program. Windows will do that "I found this!" crap, but just cancel it then install using the Nvidia program.
Its a bit of work but solved my not being able to play any games at all problem. Im not sure what all the Detonator Destroyer type programs do but im sure they do something similiar.

Does RTCW and ET still run properly on a server with Punkbuster running?

there is an Nvidia driver cleaner out there. NV knows it. (I could look back at one of this responses but I'm too lazy) :).
Anyway. From 1999 up untill about 8 months ago I was a HUGE NVIDIA fan. Had a few difficulties and was building a new system. Few friends talked me into trying ATI. Now running and ATI 9700 pro. I'll never be looking back. 'Nuff said.
After running the Ti4600 and now the 9700 (only 6 months apart in their release) I can't see why I ever like NVidia. Originally I went with them b/c of their driver support. Now it seems they've even screwed that up.
To me, my 9700 pro is the best purchase for my PC ever. And yes, I know the 9700 series isn't the best gamer card ATI produced. Still luvin it.

Really that is what seems to be difference between the two now.
ATI kind of went the DX way and NVidia went the OpenGL way.
OpenGL is overall a better gaming platform but since Microsoft owns DX...
Unfortunately, since MS makes the DX SDK kit free to game developers (and supports it),OpenGL games are few and far between even though it's better.
Just another way MS had F'ed up our world.

Your gonna have to get with your vidcard manufacturer on this one. Its wierd that OGL works and DX doesnt. I have never heard of this kind of problem before.

ATI was the one that started supporting OpenGL back in the old HL days though. Nvidia was doing something else i dont remember what it was called.... it wasnt DX though....

Well, if you want to go the extreme short of an OS wipe/install you can try uninstalling and reinstalling DirectX. First download the DirectX binary from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A6DEE0DB-DCCE-43EA-87BB-7C7E1FD1EAA2&displaylang=en)
(That's the distro package) And your graphics drivers.
Then uninstall your graphics drivers.
Then uninstall DirectX with this http://www.majorgeeks.com/download509.html (If this doesn't work there are other utilities on the same website under "driver tools"
Then reinstall your drivers.
This is usually something I leave as a last resort as it does wipe and replace system files. Good luck!

Ahh, i dont really wanna format again, I only format if im in dire need, (Like my computer just straight up dosnt work) I can just use my laptop for direct 3d games for now.
But i know thats probably what im gonna have to do eventually
Im hoping the problem just fixes it self
And 3DFX made voodoo.... Nvidia baught 3DFX... 3DFX was also directed towards OpenGL apps.
