Man, I'm perplexed.

Here is the dilemma. I just bought a new external hard drive that connects via 2.0 USB. I have all 6 of my USB ports taken up (4 2.0 and 2 1.1). Now, my 1.1 ports are in the front of the machine, while the 2.0 ports are in the rear. When I attach my new HDD to a 2.0 port in the back, I get the "You have attached a HI SPEED USB Device into a non-HI SPEED USB port. Connect the device to a hub detailed in bold, etc." But I know for a fact that the ones in the rear are 2.0 and the ones up front are 1.1. Perplexing. Story goes on...

after i open the error message help screen, there is one bolded, and it says "USB ROOT HUB (4 PORTS)" and underneath it, it says that nothing is in there. But every port is currently being used.

THIS is what annoys me most:
There is this port that LOOKS like a USB port, but it's a little bit bigger than your normal port and looks to be twice the thickness (height) of a USB "A" male port. Is this for some sort of external hub to be plugged in there? Do external hubs have thicker male jacks than normal USB males?

I can't seem to find anything on the internet, and the formating of my new hard drive is super slow while using 1.1.

grrrr.

Please advise.

Hmm. Sounds strange. Not sure what to suggest regarding the USB2/1.1 problem. Try plugging it in directly to the computer if your not?

About the mystery connector there are only 4 "standard" USB connectors I can think of: A, B, mini B and mini B ver2. (Of which they have males and females of course)
Maybe it matches one of these on this webpage? http://www.connectronics.com/usb/cables.htm
How many pins does it have?

I would imagine that the larger port is a firewire port which has nothing to do with USB.

All connections for USB male and female ends identical regardless of 2.0 or 1.1. Its all about what your plugging it into i.e. a 2.0 or 1.1 that makes that difference.

If your computer is home built or has come with a driver installation CD for the motherboard, I highly suggest you reinstall the USB drivers for your motherboard to see if that fixes it.

Hmmmmmm....I have a USB 2.0 external 40GB drive and had no problems hooking it up under the XP environment.

W/O seeing the other port, I'd guess firewire too. Especially if it's larger and has an angled top. (6 sided)

I kind of got lost in your description of events.

Did you plug the HD into the rear USB (2.0) port directly? Then did you try the front USB (1.1) directly? If so, same results?

Secondly, was there any software or drivers with the HD? USB SHOULD detect the new device but if there are not built in drivers for it, it won't know what kind of device it is.

Third, did ANYTHING get detected when you plugged it in? Do you have another USB cable you can try?

ok, I plugged it into every single USB port I have. everytime it says the same thing...

"HI SPEED DEVICE plugged into a non-HI SPEED PORT"

wtf! I know when I bought the computer I specifically ordered USB 2.0 ports. every one of them save 2 should be 2.0. wtf.

this angers me.

Sounds like it wants a firewire port... it may have to do with the drive's settings or the port's settings. I wonder if there are jumpers that can be set or something to tell it to accept a USB connection vs. Firewire.... aka IEEE 1394

Not exactly sure how USB works but... Try taking ALL devices out of the 2.0 USB ports. Then reboot and try the USB HD again. I'm wondering of the 4 USB 2.0 ports on the back aren't all a single channel running at the lowest common denominator. (IE mouse, joystick, whatever that may be 1.1)

Yeah, USB goes with lowest common denominator make sure that's not the problem.

Another thing I just remembered. Windows XP disables USB2.0 on several Intel boards by default running them at USB1.1 They must be manually enabled by the user. Make sure this isn't the case by looking at your system devices and noting how the ports are described and if any have error messages.

Edit Oh, yeah most boards can also limit USB speeds in the bios as well. Make sure your ports aren't limited to USB1.1 in the bios.

Is this the first USB2.0 device you've tried on your computer?
