ATI 9600 question

What is the difference between the ATI RADEON 9600 XT 128MB AGP Graphics Card Model: 100-437100 and the ATI RADEON 9600 Pro 128MB DDR 8x AGP? Thought? Suggestions? Just something I'm looking into.

The XT is the newer, faster version of the card. But I'm not sure how much faster it is than the pro.

w/o going to look it up, the PRO version of the ATI cards either gave you TV tuner or 2 monitor support. Normally no performance changes, just added functionality.

The XT versions of ATI cards are newer. Not sure how new the 9600 XT is. Too lazy to go look it up. :)

"The Radeon 9600 XT, codenamed RV360, is ATi's latest mainstream card, replacing the Radeon 9600 Pro. Like the Radeon 9800 XT, this card hardly differs from its predecessor. The memory speed, for example, remains unchanged.

The 3D features remain virtually unchanged as well. ATi's design still offers four pixel pipelines and two vertex shaders with a 128Bit memory interface. The Radeon 9600 XT has 128MB of memory, while a future 256 MB design is planned.

The main new feature is the clock speed of the graphics processor, which at 500MHz is 100 MHz faster than the 9600 Pro predecessor.

The Z-compression has also seen some improvement. The Hyper-Z III+ optimizations found in all XT cards now works at a compression rate of 24:1 compared to 8:1 on the 9600 Pro. That's all the information ATi has made available, so we can't give you any more details."

Well, I bit the bullet and picked up a 9600XT. Big difference over the FX5200 I had. The NVIDIA card was great for everything except DC, which still gave me a little chop when flying and set at 1024x768 with evrything cranked up to max. Now, it's smoooooooth. I'm a re-convert. NVIDIA needs to fix their driver issues, because they've just lost one supporter. Oh, yeah, before I forget, Babyheads was right.

Glad you got a kick butt card Chaly! The 9600s are the bread-butter cards now, kinda like like the TI4200 cards were, or in my case, still are. God I love this card!

I'm not necessarily brand loyal when it comes to graphic chipsets but its kinda unfair to compare an ATI 9600 with a Nvidia 5200. They are not even close in performance I don't think either is marketed to be competitive with each other.

The 5200 are just garbage, meaning no offense to anyone here. I would prefer an ATI 9000/9100/9200 over it if I was looking for an under $75 card that could play our games nicely. The 9600s are in a totally different league, higher obviously.

Over the past 2 years I've played with you all on the 9600, 5200, and Ti4600. Everything mentioned above couldn't be more true. I think you'll be happy with your latest investment, bot. I still have my Ti4600 as my primary tho. Just something rock solid about that series i guess (older drivers of course) :| . But the latest machines i build for work all are getting (ASUS) 9600.
I try and mix my ATI use with my NVidia use like my COD and DC.

With the coming PCI Extreme bus (something I was blissfully ignorant of until just recently :roll: ), I would think we'll be seeing a significant decrease in pricing for the AGP cards in the near future.

Guess my old AGP 4x mobos will have to go. :|

PCI Express will replace AGP video cards
the new standard on which video cards will be using

Also, look for BTX to replace ATX in the motherboard form factor market. Still, from what I've read in the supergeekazoid mags, though we may see these itmes in 2004, we'll still find plenty of support for AGP and ATX. The frist PCI-Express boards from nVidia and ATI will both probably be insanely pricey and could very well be buggy, like many first generation products are.

LOL I'm reading this 3 days late??? No WONDER I felt good all of a sudden on the 14th!

Glad to see you are a convert. Remember one thing about me, I am a LOYAL consumer until I am shown otherwise. I LOVED Nvidia. The TI4200 was the BEST card I ever owned. Then came the 9700 pro. I got lucky nabbing it for a mere 180 but that was only 30 bucks more than I paid for my Ti4200. I couldn't lose. Then I started to hear about mash's issues. THat and the issues of the others at the forums with the Nvidia cards. Then came the "nvidia is cheating" deal. Then Valve, makers of Half Life 2 held a press conference SLAMMING nvidia's cards and making ATI thier "lil buddy". I was convinced.

I alway go with the best product for what I need. The only thing I'm pig headed on is my Intel fetish. Glad you got what you needed! Now you are ready for HL2 and Doom 3 as well!

well, might sound like a fanboy, wich i am, but i really like the nvidia products. i bought the nforce 2 wich comes with the g4 440 integrated (msi k7nv2-gl i believe, not sure, havent had any problems so i havent looked at the model that much), and it rocks!!

i can run old skool wolf at 1024x768 with all details max, et same, call of duty too, even prince of persia worked!!(kinda slow, but it did!!).

my next vid card will be a fx5600 ultra or a 5900.

oh, a buddy of mine bought the 9600 xt, and sometimes his pc won't start at all (no, not even the post routine starts, it just doesn't work), he has to take out the vid card, wait something like 20 mins, turn on, hear the asus voice, install the vid card, and pray to god that it will work. he lended it to me, tryed it for almost 3 weeks, worked perfect here. but it made a mess of my video drivers, and i kinda didn't liked it. you know, brand fear. :wink:
