I could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that sharks cannot launch themselves out of the water like a dolphin could, due to the differences in their fins.
No, it is not real. I can't remember what site it was but this was discussed at length and found to be a hoax.

i still laugh at that photo though.
it reminds me of The Simpsons.
Remember that episode where little Jimmy goes to the meat packing plant/slaughterhouse and Tim McClure tells him about the food chain? That pic reminds me of the last visual slide in the food chain where the shark jumps out of the water in the creek and pulls down the gigantic ape hanging in the tree reaching for an apple.
those images just slay me.
*edit, of course it's a fake, but sharks CAN leap out of the water. Saw it on Discovery's Shark Week.

Actually they can. Great Whites in Australia exibit this behavior.

Yup, my info was wrong...
How high have you seen a shark jump out of water?
The highest I have ever seen a white shark jump out of the water is about eight to ten feet clear of the water. Occasionally you will be looking vacantly out across the ocean and one of the sharks of Seal Island will suddenly take to the air, leaving you and your guests speechless as to how such a huge animal can jump so high.
We have on many occasions also seen makos go a lot higher than white sharks and it is an amazing sight to see a cart-wheeling mako in action. Many other species of sharks jump on a regular basis such as threshers, copper sharks, spinner sharks and salmon sharks. A breach usually lasts less than one second so if you are looking in the wrong place all you get to see is a big splash and a lot of hollering from those who did see it.

It is a fake and I have the original Blackhawk picture somewhere before the shark was added... I will see if I can find it sometime today.

From what I remember, the shark is completely added and the guys on ladder and in water are modified.

even if it is fake, if a determined shark was at the right place at the right time, they CAN launch themselves out of the water. didnt ya see Air Jaws on the discovery channel? It spossible, the picture maybe be fake, but the possibility isnt.

Definitely not fake.
Might have to scrap my next Hawaii trip in favor of this. However, being Dutch, I'm not exactly proud of the Dutch history in SA. :(

Kind of reminds me of the airboat tour I took through the Everglades one year. Guide kept telling us not to lean over the side to look down into the water. Kaga thinks, OK, whatever. Then when we got back to the base, he showed us why. Hehe, gators can get 3-4 feet out of the water "dolphining" too. Just dangle chicken on a rope and it looked like synchronized swimming with 5-6 gators all comnig up at the same time.
Not something you'd expect from a creature that looks like it moves so slow and awkward on land. BTW - for a very short distance, they can outrun most humans. Remember, you don't have to be faster than the alligator, just faster than the slowest member of your group. :D

On Monday or Tuesday I'll transfer some pics. to disc of when Geri came down to visit me in Mexico and how close we got the crocidiles (10-15 ft. crocs.) and about 15 ft. from them (in the mangroes) Then some tourist starts complaining they are just lying there and starts tossing rocks to get them going

I knew it had to be fake, why would a smart shark like the Great White jump out of the water for his meal when there were still 2 more bobbing in the water...duh!!!

hehe, I should see if I can find the movie clip I took last time I went down to the Keys.
When it comes to filming/photographing wildlife, I'm not too bright.
The croc either thought I had or thought I was lunch. They can sure turn around quick. That video is kind of funny. There is a 4-5 foot croc (not a big one by any means) 30 ft from shore floating and sunning itself. So I grabbed my vid cam, started filming and walked up to the shoreline (It was real shallow and clear so I could see the bottom), croc sees/senses me, turns and starts swimming for shore. Funny thing about looking through the viewfinder, you kind of get the mental attitude of you're watching TV and it's not real. Finally realized I was going to end up on America's dumbest... I backed up and got on top of a picnic table that was there about 20 feet from shore. He (I say he just b/c of his smug little attitude) put his chin up on dry land and stared. Then it was a matter of who had more patience, me or the croc. :)

I lived in Florida for a few years and i used to go golfing with one of the Shrinks i worked with. We'd head out to this one course near the river near our hospital. We get there and grab our cart and hit the links. At the turn we go in and see this guy sitting in a chair with the club house mgr fanning him (he was whiter than MASH), while we hear sirens in the background. We decide to investigate being we are medical professionals and come to find out this guy was a tourist, was golfing and he hit his ball OB on a hole. This guy goes to retrieve his ball...which happened to be lying by an inlet and gets his ball. He comes back to the clubhouse and mentions to the mgr, How "lifelike" the gators are that are laying on the golfcourse. After the mgr. tells him that those gators are REAL, the guy passes out. We came in just in time to help the poor guy out before the ambulance and Gator control showed up. That's why i always obeyed the rule on this course to NOT retrieve ur lost ball. :D
Also, Kaga, they can definitely outrun humans for short distances. I heard a rumor that said u should run in a zigzag pattern if they are chasing u...that's crap. A lady i worked with, her husband was a game warden and his quote was this "If i'm being chased by a gator, i'm running in a straight line, hopefully faster than the gator, and hopefully faster than the idiot that is zigzagging".
