This American thanksgiving at a buddies place for our football party(Lions pwn on Turkey day....but that's all) the guys had a madden tournement going on (52 inch TV sweet ) The owner of the house was explaining (impaired didn't catch all) how he replaced the hard-drive in his X-box with a bigger one (from 4 to 40 I think) and he said he goes to blockbuster rents a mess load of games and installs them on his hard-drive ...164 I beleive he said it holds. Anybody else ever hear about this?? And is this possible ?? I know this guy is a not known as a bullshipper.

The xbox is chock full of possibilities, such as running linux, installing larger hard drives and tons of other stuff, and from what i understand its fairly easy to do some of the minor fixes. Unfortunately, you naturally void the warranty if you screw with the system.

For the most part, does anyone who tweaks with stuff actually mess with a warranty? I know that I don't even consider it when making a purchase. :?

Not sure, but not just warranty, also the possibility of exchanging it at the place you bought it from. Working in electronics, ive seen some literally destroyed systems (attempted ps2 and xbox mods) come back in with the excuse "it was like that in the box when i bought it". And mind you, we're not talking about a few scratches and dents. ....we're talking the cd tray being completely removed, and the system casing half open with wires hanging out.

on an amusing note, a buddy of mine told me about a news story that the xbox was bulletproof. Apparently the news story said that a guys roomates always stayed up late playing thier xbox really friggin loud, so one night the kid comes out of his room and fires a pistol at the xbox. The bullet ricocheted off the xbox leaving only a small dent. That was either a tiny pistol, or the xbox is made of reinforced titanium...which is very possible judging by the actual weight of the system.

Why go to those lengths when you could have a PC? I still don't get the hooplah over console systems.

Ditto.

The only reason I have a Playstation 2 was to play :

1. Syphon Filter series
2. Medal of Honor (originals)
3. NCAA Football (EA Sports version)

Sports games just play better on the consoles. However, I have found a USB to Playstation 2 controller adapter, so #3 may change. Also, there's nothing like playing a game on the 55" Sony TV. Motion sickness goes to all new levels. 8O

To me there are 3 reasons:

1. It is much easier to play games on a 57" widescreen with a console

2. Not all games for consoles come out for PCs (True Crime for example is not out for the PC yet and it's a very cool game).

3. To play old favorites. Some games that rocked on PS/PS2 suck on PC.

There was one. Not sure if you can still find it. Didn't allow you to play them ALL but some worked.

stick, u can d/l a PSX Emulator (been awhile since i messed w/ any emus, so youre own your own for finding one), and it allows you to play most PSX games on your PC. although it sucks compared to just using a Playstation ;)

i started out as a console gamer back in the days where pc games were DOS dot-and-line patterns and sucked something awful. thats why i still love console games is cuz there are soooo many favorites ive had over the years :D

yes puppy it's true. i have modded my xbox with the help of a forum member. i did not replace the hard drive though, although i may in the near future. i rent games and if my son likes them i copy them to the hard drive then transfer them to my pc and make copies. i also use the xbox as a cheap web browser, i listen to internet radio streams through it, and i have set it up to watch the movies i have downloaded off the net (the movies reside on my pc's hard drive).
i used an executer mod chip that was a solderless design. it was as simple as opening the case, aligning the chip and tightening down the provided screw. then you flash a bios onto the chip and install your dashboard of choice.....slayers and firef***ers make auto install discs of the evox dash and most sought after software. other nice features of this mod is a region free dvd player, you do not have to buy M$ dvd dongle to watch movies, copying of games and or movies, xbmc (xbox media center) which lets you listen and watch internet feeds or create your own media center for mp3's etc etc. i'm not much for emulators but if you are there are a bunch of them you can download along with the roms to play arcade classics, snes games, genesis games, n64......
