View Full Version : Good morning. Welcome to your flood.
Melting snow + 1-2 inches of rain in a few hours =
Water poring through the walls

And coming up through the floor.

After 25 trips with the 12-gallon shop vac I have had enough.
So how is your day going?

My suggestion would be, get the shop vac that you can connect a garden hose to, then you can save your back from further disfigurement.

Did that twice this year. At least your basement isn't finished.
Had to steam clean the carpeting of 1,200 sq ft twice. :( Won't even go into the panneling and doors I had to work on.

True. I did have a ton of stuff that was in boxes on the floor. So far I think the photo albums, a bunch of books, my girlfriend's oil paintings, a floor lamp, and so on. I took plenty of pictures to show my landlord. We need to have a chat.

If you still had that long hair, you could soak it up with your long locks of man hair...

Finally! A legitimate reason for growing it back. I'll march in and tell my company all about it. I'm sure they'll understand.
Yeah... the weather here is rough too. :P

How many acres of charred land can be had on the cheap there?
Let's see. Earthquakes. Check. Gigantic wild fires. Check. Massive debt. Check. The Terminator as governor. Check. Freeways of death. Check. I'm sure I'm leaving something out but you definitely got it going on out there in Cali. :P

You could get 1/4 acre of it for the price of the entire state of Rhode Island.

Then it's the same price (1/4 acre = 1/4 acre)

OMG Iggy. Hope your photos didn't get ruined.
I have a feeling I'll be looking at the same type of thing this spring :(
At the moment though, it's a balmy -28C (don't know the F, about -15F?). Going down to -34C overnight (will be the coldest weather I've ever experienced then). At some point this winter I'll see if I can spit in the air and have it freeze before it hits the ground.
God, get me out of here

Iggy, check out Home Depot for a sump pump. Get the necessary piping/hoses to run it outside. You've got to make sure your furnace doesn't get wet, or you'll freeze your can off. Pumps run from $70 - $150. It'll be well worth it, because I think we're only seeing the tip of the iceberg. My sump's been going all night and all day.

And charge it to your landlord! Or subtract it from your rent. I hope you have renters insurance.
I had a buddy here in Austin who had a basement just like yours, only it took a lot less rain. He had fungus in his basement never before seen...
Oh, yeah, you may need to get a dehumidifier, as well. A decent one's about $200. Definitely make sure the landlord pays for them. If you don't get a dehumidifier, you're going to have one funky smelling basement. Kind of like SKs 'midget box' in his cellar.

I have both a sump pump and a dehumidifier. The sump pump was chugging along but it just couldn't keep up with the 'bleeding walls'. I did the heavy work with my shop vac and now I have the dehumidifier running on high. It is starting to dry but there are a few puddles that just keep filling back up.
BTW, this house was a total dump when we moved in. It took us a long time to get the basement anywhere near clean. Check this out. The lady that lived here kept her dog in the basement so it smelled awful. It was almost enough to make you gag it was so bad. The concrete was all busted up so we patched it.

There was so much dust in the air when we were cleaning, we had to wear bandannas just to keep from gagging. Nice, right?

We did a pretty good job and ended up painting the walls and the floor so we could keep it somewhat clean. We used waterproofing and mold-proofing paint. the mold-proofing worked but apparently the waterproofing obviously leaves something to be desired. The bottom line is, as a renter, I have gone as far as I am willing to. I have probably spent 100's of hours doing things to improve this house and for what? So he can turn around and rent it for more when we leave? Not gonna happen.

Think of it as good experience for when you get your own home. :D

A crappy one, yes. I forgot the best part in my other post. See those large beams running down the ceiling? They are at just about 5' 10". I am 6' 4". Do the math. I literally knocked myself out when we were cleaning. Went down like ton of bricks and for the life of me could not figure out why I was on the ground (you know that spaced out feeling after regaining consciousness). Then I found the lump on my forehead.

Planning to go and rob some stagecoaches later?
