I disagree, but only because of my own personal interpretation and not based on scientific fact.

I think the red sky depicts the anger and tormentation of the artist/rendering of the subject by the artist. Red, as we all know, is a very "angry" colour and world renown psychologists have explained that colours can change aspects of our mood on a deep, psychological level.

This is one of the reasons why Interior Designers take classes in coloured mood orientations or whatever and also why only soft colors like blue are used in rooms meant for calming.
